“I don’t either, but it’s the fastest way to solve my problem. Once Leslie sees me with you, and she’s already seen me with Millie, she’ll finally understand the kind of faithless asshole I am.”
Lulu snorted. “What if this doesn’t work?”
“I don’t even want to think about it.” I opened the door to Oz’s old room and pulled Lulu inside. Just as I was about to close the door, I had second thoughts. It made more sense to leave it fully open.
Lulu crossed her arms and glared at me. “I have a bad feeling—”
“Don’t say it,” I growled.
“--About this,” she went on anyway.
Fuck!I didn’t want to admit it but so did I. Knowing that Millie was in my room waiting for me was driving me to do something desperate. I wondered if she was already naked and on the bed. That thought put a grin on my face until I heard someone approaching the room.
“Thought you might like a tour of the place,” I heard Doc mention.
I grabbed Lulu and pushed her up against the wall. She gasped at the abruptness of it but didn’t fight me when I pulled her arms up and pinned them above her head. I wasn’t going to kiss her. She wouldn’t expect me to anyway, but I did move in and nuzzle against the side of her neck. I put my hand on her leg and slowly inched my way up the outside of her thigh beneath her skirt. She moaned, but even I knew a fake moan when I heard one.
All I could think of was how Lulu wasn’t Millie, and that my dick wasn’t the slightest bit interested in her. When I sensed Doc and Leslie were at the door, I groaned a couple of times. Leslie’s sharp cry said it all, and I hoped that she’d finally gotten the message that I wasn’t for her. The next thing I heard was Leslie running off sobbing something that I couldn’t make out.
Jesus, why had she forced me into this situation?
“Hope you know what you’re doing, Brother,” Doc snarled before he walked away.
I’d explain to him later.
I turned back to Lulu. “Thank you, sweetheart.” I was still holding her arms pinned up above her head, still had my body up against hers, and had started to shift my position away from her when I heard another, more pain-filled, heart wrenching sob.
One of total disbelief and betrayal.
My blood turned cold as the ramifications of what that sound meant sunk in, and I cursed myself a thousand times over when it dawned on me that Oz’s room was directly across from mine. How could I have been so fucking stupid? It seemed that I was determined to ruin what Millie and I had. I turned reluctantly and met her tear-filled eyes, met the accusation in them. The look of utter pain and humiliation on her beautiful face twisted like a knife in my gut. I’d fall on my own knife to wipe that brokenness off her face.
She seemed frozen in place, taking in a scene that I knew solidified her belief that I couldn’t be trusted with her heart.
“Millie—”
Her eyes moved from me to Lulu to me again.
“Baby, let me explain.”
The sound of my voice seemed to wake her from the stunned daze that she’d fallen into. She took a step out into the hallway, and something, maybe some small noise, caused her to turn her head in the direction that Doc and Leslie had just walked off in. A tiny crease appeared between her brow as she stood there for a minute, her gaze on something I couldn’t see. I could almost see the wheels turning in her head as she thought deeply about something, and then dawning slowly appeared on her face.
Still, doubt lingered there.
She turned back to me, and Lulu and wiped the tears off her cheeks. “This had better be good, lover boy.” Her tone revealed that she thought--hoped—that she knew what was going on, but she was holding off on the final verdict.
I knew better than to downplay the situation. Millie was too fucking important to me, but I couldn’t deny that I felt a little relief. Lulu slipped around me and made her way to where Millie was standing in the hallway. She’d been unusually quiet.
“Please don’t hate me, honey. It’s not what you think. I would never do anything to hurt you.”
I could hear the emotion in Lulu’s voice. It revealed how highly she thought of Millie and their friendship. Millie gave her the tiniest flicker of a smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Once Lulu walked away, it was just me and Millie.
“Well, lover boy?”
That was twice in five minutes. She was definitely going to feel the sting of my palm against her naked ass, but first, I had some explaining to do.
