“You’ll be the first to know,” I promised. He leaned in and kissed me, keeping it brief, and then we were walking together toward the door. “Are you sure you didn’t have too much to drink?”
He opened the door. “You really want me to stay, don’t you?”
I pushed playfully at his chest, so close to begging him to stay that it wasn’t funny.
“’Nite, darlin’.”
“Good night,” I returned, closing and locking my door behind him. I leaned against it with a stupid smile on my face. We hadn’t made any plans for the future, but I had a feeling that I would be hearing from Loco in the morning.
And if I didn’t hear from him by noon, I’d text his ass and ask him why I hadn’t heard from him.
Chapter 31
Millie
The very next morning Loco called early to say that something had come up and he was leaving town again. He didn’t know when he’d get back, and of course he wouldn’t tell me where he was going.
“Club business?” I asked, already knowing what his answer would be. I tried to keep the disappointment out of my voice, but I was sure he could detect it.
“Yeah. Darlin’, you might as well know that anytime I have to go away for the club it’s shit I can’t talk about.”
As he spoke, I could hear him moving around his room, probably packing. I’d heard him open a drawer and then slam it shut again.
“Is it dangerous?” I rolled into a sitting position on the edge of the bed.
His hesitation told me that it was. “Not all the time, but it can be. I won’t call you until I’m back in town.”
I didn’t like the sound of that. “I guess we can always text.”
“Baby, do not text me unless I text you first. When I’m on a job I have to focus on that and nothing else. You texting me at the wrong fucking time could cause me trouble.”
I sensed there was a lot more he that wasn’t telling me. Through V and Lissa, I’d learned that Bull and Frenchie were just as tight-lipped when it came to certain things about what happened in the club. What they did. Apparently, spilling secrets was taboo.
“Well can I at least dream about you?” I asked in exasperation.
His husky laughter came across the line. “Fuck yeah, baby. Dream about me and how I’m gonna fuck the life out of you the next time I see you. You don’t know how bad I wanted you last night.”
Yes, I did, I’d wanted him, too. His words caused an inferno to ignite inside me. I got up and moved to my closet.
“But last night was about us talking and setting shit straight. Now we can go forward, yeah?”
“Yeah,” I agreed softly.
“What have you got going on today?”
I could tell by his breathing that he was on the move. I heard a door open and close. “I have a couple of jobs and I’m meeting Lulu for lunch.” I pulled out one of my nicer t-shirts and a pair of jeans.
“Lulu is a real sweetheart.”
His comment immediately made me wonder if he’d been with her, but I shut the thought down fast. I liked my friendship with Lulu, but knowing for sure that she’d had sex with Loco would make it difficult to continue.
“You two are getting close.”
“I like her,” I admitted. “She’s educating us on the dos and don’ts and club etiquette.”
He laughed. “’Us?’”
“V, Lissa, and me.”
