Chapter 5
“It wasn’twhat it seemed. Please let me explain before you make any decisions about myself and Cyber Room. Enclosed is my address, meet me today at five o’clock and I will explain everything. Then you can decide what to make of it. To make of me and I will not stop you. ~Matthew Cobral.”
Virginia sighed as she read the text message out loud for about the tenth time since morning. She wasn’t scheduled for any cases, and it concerned her, almost as if because she’d failed her first one back, she wasn’t going to be assigned any more. She glanced at the clock on the computer, four thirty-eight. There was no reason she couldn’t go to the meeting.
Except for what had happened just after Matthew Cobral had severed the connection of their chat. For all of three minutes, she’d been fuming mad. Cyber Room had positive reviews, but did Matthew Cobral vet every person by trying them out for himself? The idea sent anger simmering in her blood. Then she remembered reading so many of the stories talking about how perfect the system match was that some only ever had one Cyber Room partner. Which ultimately meant Cobral hadn’t been fucking around with every woman who applied.
So her brain quickly turned to the possibility she wanted to believe in. That Matthew Cobral had seen her profile and desired her. Seeing the lust in his eyes, then the embarrassment and franticness right before their connection dropped out and sent her mind reeling with the thought. She’d wanted to meet Mr. Cobral since she’d seen his photo when looking up the company. Knowing she’d been about to enter a heated cybersex session with him had only fueled her desires further.
“Which is precisely why you’re going to meet him right now.” She was talking to herself as she shut her computer down for the night. She’d been contemplating what to do with the text message all day, and just like that, she’d decided.
* * *
Her hand stung as Virginia banged on the door to Matthew Cobral’s home louder than she should have. Suddenly, she felt queasy. She’d never really wanted to meet the man she’d play with in Cyber Room. Not until she’d learned who it was and now she was changing her mind again.
Suddenly the dark suit and button-down felt stifling. I can’t do this. I can’t do this.
Virginia turned on her heel to leave just as she heard the door pull open.
“Virginia?”
Her whole body tensed. His voice was sinfully smooth sounding, and she bit the inside of her cheek as she turned slowly. If she could practice in a courtroom over life and death issues, she could certainly speak to this man without jumping him.
“Would you please come in? I swear to you I’m not a sexual predator it was all a misunderstanding.” He spoke so fast she could hear the nervous in his voice.
“That would be fine. I am quite curious.” She was astounded she managed to sound so calm as her heart alternated between pounding in fear and with lust.
She stepped inside and he closed the door behind her. “If you walk straight, you’ll come to the kitchen. I’d like to sit there.”
He brushed by her to lead the way, and she felt sparks shoot through her at the contact. She wanted more. She’d come here to listen to his excuse, but now she wasn’t going to leave until she had kissed him. She may be out of practice, but she was determined and a lawyer. A combination that ensured she got her way most of the time before her husband’s death.
She sat in the seat he gestured, and he wasted no time. Her eyes lingered on the expensive stainless steel appliances and jet black cabinets, doing anything she could to not look into his gaze.
“Ms. Quark, I offer my apologies over what happened. I can assure you, it has never happened before. I have never mingled with my clients. I created that profile minutes before Mr. Matty sent you the invitation, well before I sent you one matching you with him.”
She couldn’t help as she turned to look into his dark gaze. The intensity there made she swallow. This man was not playing games. He was as serious as any lawyer she went up against, but a spark drifted in the depths of the darkness.
“But why?”
“I wanted you. I saw your photo, and I was hit with this overwhelming need. I tried to push it off, and then when I was reading your preliminary to offer you a place it was like you infected me.”
She raised a brow. “Infected? Really?” The word rubbed her the wrong way, and she wasn’t certain how to take it.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”
His hand reached out and touched hers, to hold it, and she gasped but didn’t pull it back.
“I’m sorry. I’m messing this up. Fuck.”
He slid the chair back and stood up, she followed and put a hand on his shoulder.
“Infected how?”
He turned slowly, heat blazing in his dark eyes, and she felt her body start to wake up, need beginning to take hold in her. Need for him.
“Like I had to have you. I had to meet you, I was using Cyber Room just to see the possibility of us in bed and then was going to bump into you at the courthouse.” His shoulders sagged with relief at his confession. “It was stupid, and you certainly were never supposed to know.”
He was rambling, and she was rambling in her head. Now or never Virginia. It’s time to move on, time to take what you want. She stepped up the small distance between them and placed her lips to his.
