“You just walked in!”
“Yeah, it’s a record.” He looked me over and his frown deepened.
I smiled and backed away before he could say anything. “Be right back!”
I hid my laptop under my pillows and took a few deep, fortifying breaths before going back out. I couldn’t make eye contact with the guys for fear of giving my feelings away so I made myself busy playing with Bobby.
West and Tate came over to sit and passed me on the couch. West patted Bobby’s head and then mine. “Nice shirt, kid.”
I stiffened and looked down like I’d never seen the shirt before. “Oh, this? I got desperate. You guys never brought me my own clothes.”
Mills sat down and Dean and Lennon joined us. They sat on either side of me and I cursed myself as I realized I’d put myself in the middle of the couch, in the middle of them.
“What’s the update?” Dean leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.
Mill shot a look my way. “Maybe you should go do something else, V.”
Reed surprised us all when he walked into the living room and leaned against the couch on Dean’s other side. “Vera knows what we know. She can handle it.”
I smiled at him and then shrugged at my brothers. “I’m not a little kid.”
Tate snorted. “Beg to differ.”
Dean cleared his throat. “Can we just get the information?”
Mills shifted his gaze between us but then just carried on. “The FBI raided Rick Reynolds’ house and office but there was no sign of him. It seems like he was tipped off.”
Dean stood up and swore. “How? Who the fuck could’ve done that?”
“Did y’all tell anyone other than the FBI agent you spoke with?” West winced at Dean’s dark look. “It’s just a question.”
“No. We told the two agents who are working the case.” Moving behind the couch, Dean paced more. “Did you three tell anyone?”
“We talked to Sheriff Morgan, but no one else.” Mills glanced back and forth between me and Dean. “Did you give her access to a phone?”
I blushed. The only reason I had a phone was for phone sex. I didn’t think that would be beneficial for Mills to know, however.
“No phone with outside access.” Reed shifted closer. “You trust this Sheriff Morgan?”
“We’ve known him our entire lives. He’s good.” Tate rubbed his temples. “Do you trust your FBI contacts?”
“Yes.” Lennon didn’t hesitate.
Mills stood up and put his hands on his hips. “There’s something more going on here.”
CHAPTER 36
Vera
The energy in the room shifted. I stood up and rolled my eyes. “You need to relax, Mills.”
“No. No, I’m right. One of you better start talking.” He moved his angry gaze from me to the guys. “There’s a weird energy between you four.”
Tate’s eyes narrowed and then widened as he stood up, too. “Fuck no.”
“Guys, stop.” I didn’t know what to do. I was literally in the middle and terrified of how my brothers were going to carry on.
“Shut up, Vera.” Mills’ tone was pure venom. “Someone had better start talking.”
