“King, get off him,” one of the men—a wolf I thought—said.

The lion didn’t move.

“King, get off him.” He was not messing around.

Finally, the lion released me and stepped back, but he didn’t shift like the others did. He was ready to pounce and end me with one command.

I took my human skin. “I know you told me not to come back.”

“And yet, here you are.”

I wasn’t sure who was speaking, afraid to so much as to turn my head.

“We told you the consequences if you came back,” another shifter snapped.

My mate’s scent was here, barely. Which shifter did it belong to? Would I be able to feel their touch before they took me down? That alone would make this worth it.

But one thing for sure, I wasn’t leaving this clearing alive.

“I understand.” I dropped to my knees and bared my neck. I was giving them permission to do what they needed to. They weren’t the bad guys. I was. There was no need to make it harder on them than it needed to be.

“Before I go” --a sugar-coated way to say that if there ever was one — “could you… could you maybe tell me which one of you is my mate?”

There was a chorus offucks.

The next thing I knew, I was being pulled to my feet.

“Let’s go,” someone ordered.

I wasn’t sure if this was good or bad. Whichever the case might be, it was what it was.

Chapter Five

Sutton

Harris laughed and leaned back in his chair. He was coming along quickly with his lessons. He studied and Tyrus taught him all kinds of things outside of classes, usually with one of his twins sitting on his lap. He said it was important they see their papa learning and becoming self-sufficient.

I had to admit, a part of me hoped one of these omegas was mine.

They weren’t, for the record.

“What are you laughing at?” I asked.

“You’re on the team now, right? With Hammer and the others? The ones that saved us?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Then you’d better answer your phone. It’s been blowing up for five minutes straight.”

Even his little one laughed at me.

I opened the phone just as it vibrated once more. “Sutton here.”

Aziz was on the other line. “You’re needed in the secure room five minutes ago.

I hopped up and bolted for the room where meetings were held. A recent add-on, I’d been told. Once inside, I realized this was no meeting.

There was a man in the middle of the room was bound hand and foot with zip ties and surrounded by the team. “Who is this?” I asked after shutting the door.
