Kassie’s name appeared. When the call went to voicemail, she felt the phone vibrate as she started to shut it off. A text came through.
Call ASAP. Emergency.
Her first thought flew to Lizzy. Maybe they got news.
“I’m sorry Bryan. Kassie texted. There’s an emergency. I have to call.” He sighed, heavily disappointed as he made his way over to the couch.
Kassie answered on the first ring.
“Samantha, where are you?”
“I’m at home, why?” Samantha sensed the urgency in Kassie’s voice.
“Is Bryan with you? Joe made some calls. You need to get to the airport right away. Whiskey and the kids were involved in an accident. He tried to reach you,” Kassie explained.
Samantha didn’t need to hear anymore; she dropped her phone. She rushed to her room, throwing on a pair of jeans and a sweater. She grabbed a bag and stuffed her clothes and essentials while Bryan took the information from her friend.
Bryan called the car service while Samantha grabbed the coats.
Within minutes, the car headed to the private airport where Joe called in a favor to get her to Serenity faster.
She jumped out of the car as it rolled to a stop. She turned as Bryan grabbed her luggage and handed it to the attendant.
“Aren’t you coming?” She searched his face.
“I have a meeting in the morning. I’ll fly out afterward. Go. You won’t ease your mind until you see LJ for yourself.” He pulled her to him and kissed her.
“Bryan.” Samantha pulled him into a hug. She didn’t know what to say about earlier.
“Family first. Go check on your son.” He hurried her along. She buckled in and frantically texted Kassie.
On the flight. How is he? Tell him I’m coming.
Kassie texted right away.
They’re doing x-rays and running scans. I’ll keep you posted.
She bit her nails. Her knee bounced up and down. The attendant asked her if she wanted anything to eat or drink. “No, thank you.” She wanted to get home. Another text came through.
Melody’s got a concussion. Nugget broke a couple of fingers and left arm.
Whiskey’s going in for surgery. I’ll let you know as soon as we know something.
Wait. What? Nobody said anything about Whiskey being injured!
The plane took off down the runway. “Ma’am. I’ll need you to put electronic devices away until we reach altitude.”
Samantha pressed her head against the seat. Nausea rolled in her stomach. What if she lost him again? What happened?
When the captain announced they reached altitude, she frantically pulled the phone back out.
What happened? What about LJ and Whiskey?
Nothing. She shook her phone in frustration. No bars showed.
The attendant walked into the cabin. “We lost internet. We’ll have it checked when we reach Seattle.”
Samantha’s head began to pound. She picked at her lip and glanced at her phone and groaned. The flight still had five hours to go.
