‘Am I that scary?’
‘No, you’re not scary at all now you’ve stopped being angry with me. I love talking to you. It’s just I don’t know if I should be calling you.’
‘You can talk to me anytime.’ Lucy said.
35
Lucy yawned. She needed another caffeine hit. She hadn’t slept well thinking about Mark. They’d stayed on the phone talking until nearly 2 am, but she had still been too energised to relax.
Her mobile rang. Mark. She wasn’t expecting him to call back so soon.
‘Hi,’ she said.
‘Are you ok?’ He sounded worried.
‘Yes, of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?’
‘I’m really sorry about last night. I shouldn’t have kept you talking so late.’
Her heart sank. Why did he sound regretful now? ‘I enjoyed talking to you.’
‘But what about Josh?’
‘He wasn’t there.’ It was odd. Despite being on the phone for the best part of two hours last night, Josh’s name hadn’t come up at all.
‘I knew that. I meant … I know how I’d feel if my girlfriend had spent hours on the phone with her ex.’
‘Josh and I have split up. I realised he wasn’t for me in the car on the way home from London.’
‘That’s good. Oh shit, I’m sorry you’ve split up. I’m making a mess of this.’
At least he was pleased that Josh was a goner as far as Lucy was concerned. ‘It’s ok. I knew what you meant.’
‘Can we still be friends?’
Friends. Lucy tried to hide her disappointment. ‘Yes, we can still be friends.’
She could hear voices in the background.
‘I’ve got to go,’ Mark said. ‘I need to get the business open. Can I phone you again tonight?’
‘Yes, I’d like that.’ Lucy leaned back in her chair and sighed.
Kizzy looked up from her desk. ‘That wasn’t Josh, was it?’
‘No, Mark.’
Kizzy pulled a disapproving face. ‘He’s friend-zoned you?’
‘Yep.’
‘You need to send him a clit pic.’
‘A what?’
‘You know, like a dick pic but your bits.’
‘And you think that will work, will it?’
