Lucy FaceTimed Em on Monday evening after work.

‘You don’t look that brown.’ Em was looking closely at Lucy on her screen.

‘I didn’t get an opportunity to sunbathe. Mark had other ways of keeping me occupied.’

‘I can tell. You’ve got a glow about you that I’ve not noticed in years. When are you seeing him again?’

‘I’m flying back out there on Thursday evening.’

‘Taking time off work? It must be serious.’

‘I can catch up with a few emails and documents while Mark’s at the beach.’

‘Are you going to fly out to Spain every weekend?’

‘For the next few weeks. Mark can come here when the season’s finished at the end of October.‘

‘Planning ahead. That’s a good sign.’

‘Yes, it is.’ Lucy beamed. ‘Anyway, enough about me. How are you and your lovely new house?’

‘I’m not sure how lovely it is at the moment. It feels like half of the old fixtures and fittings are in the skip now. And Jack can’t help much as he’s working long hours getting up to speed on his new job. It feels weird without him here all the time. I was spoilt over the holidays.’

‘Sounds like you need cheering up.’

‘I’m ok. Just tired. By the way, have you heard Ella and Sam’s big news?’

Lucy took a sharp intake of breath. ‘What news?’ she asked, just in case it wasn’t what she thought it was.

‘They’re having a baby.’

So it was that. ‘That’s nice,’ she said, trying desperately not to cry.

‘Are you ok?’

Remember what Mark said. She took a deep breath. ‘I’ve got something I need to tell you.’

‘I did it,’ Lucy said as soon as Mark answered her FaceTime call.

‘Did what?’ he asked.

‘I’ve just told Em about my spot of bother.’

‘And?’

‘It was ok. She was upset. But not with me. We both cried. But I think it will be alright now.’

‘I’m proud of you,’ he said. ‘Sorry, that sounded patronising, but you know what I mean.’

‘Yes, I do. Thank you for being supportive.’

‘My pleasure.’ He smiled.

‘I love you.’ It was the first time she’d said those words to any man since Dylan.

‘Oh, Luce. I love you, too.’
