‘Sorry.’ He scooped her up and carried her into the bathroom.
‘Jack, do you think we’ll have room for a big freestanding bath in our new house? Like the one Nancy has in her London flat?’
‘We haven’t even seen the house yet. And right now, my mind is not thinking about interior design.‘ He gently put her down on the edge of the bath, put the plug in and turned the taps on.
‘It would be lovely, though,’ Em said as she helped him undress.
‘I was hoping we hadn’t reached the stage in our relationship where bathroom fittings were more interesting than sex.’
She grinned at him cheekily. ‘But a big rolltop bath would give us a lot more room for that.’
He grinned back. ‘I see I’m going to have to work much harder to take your mind off Homes & Gardens magazine.’
Jack picked her up and dumped her, giggling in the water.
Half an hour later, Em and Jack were snuggled up in bed together.
‘Are we going to get on with planning our wedding?’ Jack asked. ‘If we decide to buy Eddie Earles’ house, we won’t have time to think about it for months.’
He had a point. ‘Where shall we start?’ Em asked.
‘The guest list?’
Em reached for her phone and created a new note. ‘Fire away.’
‘You and me.’
Em started typing. ‘Lucy. Possibly Josh.’
‘Who’s Josh?’
‘Lucy’s latest love interest. They’re having their second date tomorrow, but I’ve got a good feeling about him.’
‘Really? I bet she’ll have got through several men by the time we walk down the aisle.’
‘Don’t be so mean.’
‘But it’s true. She may as well install a revolving door on her apartment.’
‘That is really judgy. She doesn’t have much luck with men, that’s all. She had a long-term boyfriend years ago. Dylan. We thought he and Lucy would be partners for life. They seemed so good together.’
‘What happened to him?’
‘We never got to the bottom of it. They broke up when I was living in London. One day, they were all loved up and pretty much living together, the next, she didn’t want to mention his name. She didn’t go out with anyone else for at least a year afterwards.’
‘She’s making up for lost time now.’
Em glared at him.
‘I’m sorry,’ he said, ‘but Mark was seriously cut up about her ghosting him. She could at least have given him an explanation.’
‘Well, we’re not going resolve that now. I’ll put Lucy plus one.’
‘Mark and Hannah.’
‘Do you think they’ll still be together next May?’ Em felt mean hoping they wouldn’t but she didn’t get on with Mark’s latest girlfriend.
‘She’s lasted longer than most.’
