Tugging and tugging, I took him to my dresser. “See? Which ones do you want? I want to be a…hmm…a dentist.”
The smiley face on my jammies had big teeth and Leander said they looked like dentist jammies.
Daddy grinned and showed his teeth like the smiley face. “I can see that. Okay, if I’m picking out jammies, does that mean I’m staying over? My jeans are comfortable, so I don’t need to change clothes even if we get a shower together.”
Daddy changed clothes to get ready for our date because I was too special to be dirty for, but he couldn’t sleep in his clothes even if they were still clean.
“You can’t sleep in jeans. I’ll be itchy.” And he looked squished, so I’d be uncomfortable too. “You can be…Scooby-Doo.”
Picking out the best pair for Daddy, I looked down. “Do you need undies?”
He shrugged. “Probably a good idea.”
“Okay.” Hmm. “You can have…the bigger ones.”
Daddy snickered. “Thank you.”
Silly goose.
“Can I wash my clothes before we go to bed? Later, of course.” He looked over at his pile in the corner. “I don’t want to start work dirty and then get dirtier.”
“Oh yes.” He thought about good stuff. “And tomorrow I’ll make you breakfast. You like my muffins.”
Daddy gave me a big smile. “The chocolate ones?”
“Yes.” Nothing yucky for Daddy. “The big chocolate ones.”
“You’re going to spoil me.” Daddy looked like he wanted to be spoiled. “But we’ve got about one more day and then you’re going to have your finished kitchen to cook in.”
Oh.
Hmm.
Daddy set the jammies on the dresser. “Come here. I know what that look means.”
“I don’t have a look.” I didn’t do stuff like that. “I was just thinking.”
Kinda.
Daddy huffed and glared at me as he kissed my head. “Bullshit. But that’s okay. I’m glad you don’t want me to leave.”
Hmm.
Well, if he’d already guessed.
“You’ve been here for years and years. You have to stay.” There had to be stuff to fix. “You said you were going to help with the sound stuff…and…and I need a bigger closet?”
Yes. Those were good ideas.
But Daddy shook his head ‘cause he was a meanie. “You’re going to see me lots and lots.”
“But I see you every day.” Almost. “You’re always here. I can go find a snack and find you and get attention and then go back to work. I like that. You have to stay.”
The house was old…we could keep him busy.
Daddies liked to stay busy.
“How about if I promise to see you at least once every day?” Daddy looked like he meant it but Daddies didn’t do that.
