But then, close beside me in the darkness, I heard his haunting voice, “Run, run, run, Little Lamb.”

My blood felt like it had evaporated entirely from my whole body. Even my heart didn’t know whether to beat or shut up.I jumped away from the direction of his voice, knowing he probably loved the fact that I looked exactly like a lamb running from a wolf.I growled in the darkness, refusing to be fucking prey. I had a job to do, and dammit, I was going to do it.

Lowering my cuffed hands, I stepped over them so I had the metal bracelets in front of me. Walking forward in the pitch-black hallway, I realized we’d never reached the admin office.

As my hands grappled, guiding me along the wall, I paused, touching the glass. I quickly explored the area and moved my locked hands over what had to be a window as fast as possible. I didn’t know where it led, but I had no other option.

Not thinking further, I smashed the metal cuffs into the side of the glass over and over until it shattered. Running my hands and forearms around the almost empty wooden frame, I jumped up to hoist myself over it.

Fear flooded my veins until I fell onto a tile floor on the other side. Thank god the height to solid ground hadn’t been that far away, but I still didn’t know where I was. This whole scenario was crazy. It had to be some kind of test.

Maybe Quinn set this up?

Inhaling hard, I tried to slow my thundering heart. A strong scent of cleaner wafted my way as I scrambled until my feet found purchase. Now, I was pissed off. Seriously…this had to be a setup.

Tears of frustration began to well in my eyes, but that was when a tiny bit of light lit the darkness. After a long moment of listening to my breathing, I could tell I was in another hallway, but at least the strange sense of heat that had surrounded me before was gone.

Maybe Quinn hadn’t set this up because one of the triplets certainly would not have been a part of this situation. Was the whole facility in a blackout?

A nagging burn on my arm intensified as my adrenaline calmed a bit. I knew I’d cut myself on the jagged edges of the broken glass, but I hadn’t realized until now just how deeply.

My blood was probably leading those psychopaths right to me.I bit the collar of my shirt, trying to pull it off of me to use as a bandage. With the help of my thumbs, I was able to yank the garment upward. Finally, I wiggled it off my head. Trying again with my teeth and the cuffs, I managed to wrap the material overmy forearm, and with the help of the wall to anchor it steady, one last tug with my mouth secured a makeshift bandage. The sting eased a bit, and I hoped the blood trail did as well.

I started walking slowly forward into the unknown, but it was better than waiting for the unhinged triplets or any of their friends to find me.

After I walkedfor what felt like an hour, only managing to bump into walls and hear weird noises, my wound was getting to me. My head throbbed and was a mess from Goliath’s warning.

And when would someone turn on the godforsaken lights?

A hissed whisper startled me. Turning my eyes toward the human voice, I tried to focus on the shadowy blur, but my vision wasn’t cooperating. Whomever this was appeared to be standing beside a corner.

“Hey, over here!” The voice sounded feminine.

I drew my brows together, gauging whether I should trust the figure.

“They aren’t far. Come on!”

I gulped, and my decision made me stumble as I moved toward who I hoped was a woman.

She grabbed my cuffed arms and started to run, dragging me behind her. I was barely able to follow her sprint in the darkness. She stopped suddenly, and I crashed into her, both of us landing in a heap.

Cursing, she pulled herself and me back to our feet.

“Here,” she said, becoming extremely quiet for a second.

A moment later, a clicking sound happened to my right. Out of nowhere, light appeared through a hole in the wall.I gaspedand let my eyes adjust as I followed her into the strange space on the other side of the wall.

“This place used to be war tunnels or something. Hospital Twelve is built on a lot of these caverns. I have found about five of them since being here.”

A shuffling sound started behind me until I heard a click and a hiss. A soft, yellow light warmed the space. Looking at the source of the light, I saw it was coming from an old kerosene lantern. We were in some sort of bomb shelter?

I blinked my eyes, finally focusing on her. She was a pretty girl. Her red hair looked soft and satiny. She wore a simple black dress, which didn’t detract from her beauty.

“Who are you?” I said, looking at a wall that housed a ton of cans and nonperishables.

“I’m Emily, but you can call me Emmy,” she answered, smiling sweetly with what appeared to be genuine kindness.

She did rescue me from being hunted by a known killer. But in a place like this, I couldn’t be too careful.
