“Did something happen? I rarely believe any news articles. I’ve had my fair share of fables told on my behalf, so trust me when I say whatever you tell me, I will believe without question.”
I pondered that. He believed the news to be rumors.
“Quinn, in order for me to be honest with you, I am going to need some assurances first. I have conditions.
The detective sighed. “Would one of those conditions be a certain patient?”
“Yes.”
“What about Goliath, Ezello?”
I had everything I was going to say memorized like a script. But when I opened my mouth to speak, I stopped. Quinn had every reason not to trust my ability to do the job, and everyone at the station was right, knowing I’d fail.
But I hadn’t failed.
I just hadn’t caught The Reaper.
He caught me.
“I want to know why the files on each triplet have been forged.”I started, and the memories of the falsified documents were so clear in my mind that it was like they were still in my hands. “And what became of Xenia, Pharaoh’s daughter?”
Quinn cleared his throat. He didn’t sound shocked by my questions, which confirmed what I had known for a while.
“And what was Goliath accused of?”
Now, I waited for answers, half expecting Micah to hang up and track my phone, leading a brigade to take us all away for good.
“I was on a job with Goliath. Our orders were to be a security team for the asylum. Patients were going missing at the time.”
Quieting my silent shock, I kept listening.
“Goliath and I were at Hospital Twelve when a call came in about a possible suicidal patient, and we were told to go inside the facility to secure the patient.”
He took a deep breath.
“When we got inside, the place was already in complete chaos. There was blood everywhere, patients killed, and doctors completely ripped apart. They had been shredded to bits by knife wounds.”
“So, The Reaper is not a new occurrence. The force just obliterated the records and chose to hide the fact that the murderer was never caught?” I confirmed.
“Look, this would be better to talk about in person. Where are you, Ezello?”
I shook my head. “You and I are both aware, detective, that you tracked my phone when you knew it was me on the line.”
He laughed. “All right then. Do I have your permission to meet with you, officer?”
Taking the biggest breath I ever had, I sealed my fate. “I am assuming you’re three minutes out by now, so I’ll see you then, detective.”
In true detective fashion,Micah’s SUV police cruiser came up to the cabin, the gravel roads crunching under the wheels.
Sliding out of the door, I watched the beautiful “male model” emerge and walk toward me. He hadn’t brought the calvary, so I was pleased to know that for the time being, at least, I could finally get some answers.
“Over here, Micah.” I gestured at the seat next to me on the porch, and he sat down with a tight smile.
He had a slight accent, and I couldn’t place where it was from, but I could hear it when he spoke.
“I think I’ve earned some truth, Micah.” I started. “Don’t you?
Micah sighed and patted my leg.
