Knowing it took a lot for her to admit that, he didn’t comment, but her revelation still made him feel pretty damn great.

She stuck the key in the ignition and her car roared to life.

“You’ll text me the minute you get home?”

“Only if you plan on answering me,” came her snarky reply, obviously over her discomfort.

“I’m never going to live that down, am I?”

“Well, I wouldn’t say never, but if I were you, I wouldn’t hold my breath either.”

She leaned over and grabbed the door handle, slamming it shut, giving him a jaunty finger wave before putting the car in reverse and backing out.

Vas watched her until she disappeared down the street before heading back home, feeling so damn good, he actually whistled along the way.

Chapter 11

Even though Anna was expecting Tiffany, she still peeked out the side window, keeping her promise to Vas, when she heard the knock at her door Thursday afternoon.

Upon seeing her, Tiffany’s eyes widened, and she mouthed, “Open up. Quick!”

Unlocking the deadbolt, she threw the door wide.

“Sorry, I know that was dramatic,” she said, barreling in. “But there’s some scary-looking dude out there and he was giving me the evil eye.”

Anna poked her head out the door to make sure it was the same guy she’d been seeing lately, giving him a small wave before closing the door and locking it. “I think he’s pretty harmless. He’s been hanging around for a few weeks now and hasn’t done anything threatening.”

“You don’t find that a bit odd?” Tiffany asked, tossing her bag on the couch and removing her jacket, revealing the Red’s tee she wore underneath.

Anna did find it odd, so shrugged, “I assume he lives here and just likes to keep an eye on the place.” Which was purely speculation. While they might have upgraded to silent hellos, by way of head bobs and small waves, there was no way in hell she would take that next step by confronting the dude soher theory would never confirmed.

“Well, it’s creepy, if you ask me.” Her eyes darted around the room. “You really fixed this place up cute.”

Anna wasn’t a professional decorator by any stretch of the word, but she did enjoy watching make-over shows on HGTV and had gotten some good ideas to spruce up the place on a budget.

“These plant hangers are amazing,” she said, fingering the fringe on one of them. “I’d love a few for my place. Where’d you get them?”

Anna shook her head. “I didn’t buy them, I made them. They were super easy. All you need is some thick cord and chunky beads. I can teach you how to do it in an afternoon.”

Her eyes went wide. “Really?”

“Sure.”

She walked over to the wall unit next. “Are these your parents?”

Anna looked at the photo Tiffany pointed to. “My mom and her husband, John. This is my dad over here.” Anna walked to the other side of the unit. “I thought it best to keep them separated. Less fighting that way.” She grinned, hoping Tiffany got her joke and was relieved by her chuckle.

“I get that. My parents are divorced too. I’m dreading the day Luke and I get married and they need to be in the same room together. I already told him we can’t get married in a church. That their fighting would be sacrilege.” She chuckled again.

“You and Luke have talked about marriage?” Anna asked, surprised. Heck they had just moved in together.

Tiffany waved a hand. “Oh, not for real, but the subject has come up. You know, like when we talk about the future.”

No, Anna didn’t understand. If she had a boyfriend, she would never bring up the subject, even in passing, unless asked first. Wasn’t that in the Dating 101 handbook under the heading—Sure-Fire Way to End a Relationship Fast?

Tiffany clapped her hands. “Okay, enough dilly-dallying. Let’s get you gussied up.”

Anna led Tiffany to her bedroom, not for the first time, regretting telling her about her date with Vas. But she’d been so excited the following day at work that Tiffany noticed and pried the information out of her. It had snowballed from there with Tiffany inviting herself over to help Anna get ready.
