I couldn’t help but laugh despite the real worries that had resurfaced since West left my side. Being here had become comfortable and I found myself enjoying their company. I’d still rather be at home but for me, it was one of the highest compliments that I wasn’t counting down the minutes until I could leave.
Chapter 36
West
Were things perfect with Willow? No, but she cried, I may or may not have cried, and we hugged. Whatever she was dealing with, she wouldn’t tell me, and I would have to accept it for now.For now. I wasn’t one to give up.
I stared down at my phone. My lip hurt from how much I’d been gnawing on it. I wasn’t sure why I’d thought this was a good idea last night, but after what happened with my sister, I’d been raw. And I’d been drunk. Someone should’ve taken my phone away so I couldn’t text my damn father.
West:I know you don’t care, but there’s a team dinner on Friday and a bunch of parents are coming and shit. I’m gonna officially be the quarterback of a big, badass university. Yay for me, right?
Pathetic. I wasn’t going to touch vodka again for a while, that was for sure. He’d read it but didn’t respond, so I sent one more text, just to give myself some closure.
West:Forget I said anything about the dinner tomorrow. Was drunk. I’m sure you’re not surprised.
It showed as read immediately but again, no response. That made it easy for me to delete the messages and move on.
As I tapped my fingers on the side of the phone, I tried to get Linc out of my head. He tended to stick around there all the time these days. There’d been many times that I decided he was a wizard. I even searched my room for a hex bag at one point. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d put some sort of love spell on me.
Maybe I should do another sweep.
Or I could go harass him. He was at home and said that he needed to practice, but… When had I ever made his life easy?
It was stupidly expensive and likely a dumb impulse to follow, but I ordered myself a ride and slipped into my slides. Since I was impatient, I waited on the front porch, staring at the little car on the screen. It’d be cool if he drove faster. I, for one, didn’t care about speed limits unless I was driving in a stolen car with a suspended license.
When he finally pulled up, I hopped into the backseat and started bouncing up and down. Was he gonna be surprised? Yes. Would he be annoyed? Hopefully. He got all bossy when I put him in a mood.
It took thirty long minutes to get to his apartment. Each one made me wonder why teleportation hadn’t been invented yet. It was 2024. That seemed doable, honestly.
I raced up the stairs two at a time and immediately knocked on his door. The sound of him playing the piano stopped and I couldn’t help but smile. When he opened the door, he frowned.
“Why?”
I shrugged. “I’m bored.”
“Don’t you have hobbies?”
“Sure, but I was thinking about you and that’s sweet, so you should be swooning.”
He put a hand on his chest and faked almost falling to the ground, then laughed. “Fine, but you have to let me practice.”
“Totallywill do that.”
After he let me in, I veered toward the kitchen. As usual, his fridge was full of old people's food. Sadly, he didn’t have any cake.
“There’s a pizza in the freezer you can make,” he said.
I pulled it out, already feeling starved just thinking about it. “Frozen pizza, Linc? I’m disappointed in you.”
“I didn’t get it for me.”
Trying not to smile, I slid the pizza into the oven without waiting for it to preheat. When I turned around, I saw him watching me.
“Are you plotting my death?” I asked.
“Always. You’ve made a mistake by letting down your guard. It’s all part of my evil plan.”
“I knew you were a villain.”
