Proof is on the way.
A few moments go by before three dots appear.
It will be taken care of tonight.
Send apologies to your wife for pulling you away from home.
We’re actually at the house in Dallas. You should stop by and visit us when you can.
I’ll think about it.
But I have no intention of going to Moretti’s house with his bride, who looks at him in ways I only dream Serafina would have looked at me, especially when they start talking about their new infant son.
If not, I’ll see you in three weeks.
See you at the ceremony.
Dropping my phone on my desk, I go to the dry bar and pour myself a drink.
Everything is about to change in my life because of the Brotherhood. I just hope it’s worth it this time.

“I can’t do this,” I say, kissing the top of Raquel’s dark head.
Cecely and Harvey share a look, but I shake my head.
“What was I thinking? I can’t leave her for three months!”
Harvey says, “Hun, it’s not three months. You even said you can see her on your days off.”
“It’s not enough.”
My eyes water and I don’t try to hide the tears from my friends.
Cecely says, “Triple your salary.”
“What?”
“He said he was going to triple your salary forthree monthsof work. Lili, you have to do this. It will give you the nest egg you’ve been working so hard for.” She pauses. “You’ll be able to spend more time with Raquel.”
I know she’s right. Hell, I hear how crazy it sounds when I say I don’t want to take the job. But when I look at my baby…
Harvey says, “Didn’t you say you quit your jobs?”
I groan. Shit. He’s right.
Cecely moves closer, taking Raquel from my arms.
“Girl, we’ll be fine here. You go and make that money.”
Forty minutes later, I pull up to Dimitri Santos’ house.
The man in question stands on the front porch, looking entirely too good in slacks and a button-up shirt. I mean, does he wake up looking perfect?
I come to a stop in front of the house and get out of the car, calling out, “I wasn’t sure where you wanted me to park.”
