“Yup.”

I shake my head. “Lili.”

“Nice to meet you, Lili. I saw you checking me out today and knew we had to meet.”

“I wasn’t checking you out!”

He grins. “You weren’t? Bummer.”

His smile is super contagious, and I find myself smiling, too.

“So I’m guessing the bike you fell off wasn’t a bicycle?”

“Nope. It was a Harley.” He frowns. “I’m itching to get back on the road, but my doc and the girls here keep telling me it’s not going to happen.”

“I’ve never been on a motorcycle.”

“It’s the best fucking feeling in the world.” He sighs. “Fuck. This is depressing.”

“How long until you can ride again?”

“At least three months. I’m determined to do it sooner, though.”

“Why? Have somewhere you want to go?”

“More like somewhere I need to be.”

“Well, that’s cryptic.”

He glances at me, and I get a glimpse of the man behind the outgoing charmer Pretty Boy projects. A man who carries sadness behind his blue eyes.

“I’m from Baton Rouge. I was sent here to find someone and failed.” He swallows. “My Prez is going to be mad that I couldn’t find his wife.”

“Where did she go?”

“She betrayed us and ran off with a rival club.”

I’m not sure what the appropriate response is, so I say, “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I just wish I was going home with better news. Swag hasn’t been the same since she left. None of us have.”

I touch his leg without thinking. “It sounds like you miss her.”

“I do. A lot.” He runs his hand over his beard. “I mostly just worry about her, ya know? She doesn’t know how bad it is out there.”

“When was the last time you saw her?”

He shakes his head and says, “It hurts too much to think about. Fuck.” He exhales. “This isn’t me. I’m not the guy who mopes over a girl. I’m the guy who cracks jokes.”

“So tell me a joke, then.”

His gaze lands on me. “Okay. Do you know how to tell if a woman is being pleased at home?”

“How?”

“If her man’s beard is bleached out right here.”

He touches the spot on his chin that I’ve heard referred to as a cum catcher. I realize Dimitri’s hair is a bit lighter in the same spot and snort as my cheeks flame.
