A few minutes later, Dani looked out the window as Alex pulled away from the church. “So that was Morgan and Ben.”
Mark, in the front passenger seat, nodded. “Morgan only has one speed, and that’s wide open.”
Alex laughingly agreed. “Did seeing the two of them jar any memories loose?”
“No...”
Mark turned and looked at her. “But?”
“I have dreams sometimes, and Ben’s in some of them.”
“And that’s why you sketched him the other night?” Alex asked.
“I’m sure it is.”
An hour later, Dani laughed with the others as Morgan related another story from their childhood. Why couldn’t she rememberanyof them? “You have a good memory.”
“She does,” Alex said. “I don’t remember half the stuff she’s talking about.”
“I do,” Nonny replied dryly. “So how long will you be in Pearl Springs?”
Morgan shrugged. “Not sure. I’d like to stay close—I have feelers out at the different TV stations in the Chattanooga, Nashville, and Knoxville areas. I’m an investigative reporter and what I’d really like to do is a crime documentary.” She took a deep breath and glanced around the table as if debating what to say next.
Dani swallowed hard. She hoped Morgan wasn’t about to suggest—
“I don’t want this to come off wrong, but I’d love to document Dani’s case and what happened twenty-five years ago.”
“Are you crazy?” Ben snapped. “What gave you that hare-brained idea?”
“It is not crazy. I always wanted to know what happened, and maybe I could help find out.”
Alex shook her head. “I think you need to stay out of this case.”
Silence fell around the table.
“I disagree, Alex,” Nonny said. “I think we can use Morgan.”
Everyone, including Dani, turned to her grandmother. “What?”
“Think about it. I’ve been checking her out, and she has a huge following on social media.”
“I do.” Morgan leaned forward. “When I was in Houston, people sent me tips all the time, and one of those tips was instrumental in helping the police catch a killer.”
“You talked to Toby in the grocery store. Did he tell you anything at all?” Mark asked.
She shook her head. “Not really. When I pressed him on it, he said to meet him later at the coffee shop and we could talk. Only he never showed.”
Nonny turned to Alex. “She needs to see my crime board.”
“Where is it?” Morgan asked.
“At the sheriff’s office.”
She turned hopeful eyes to Alex, and Dani held her breath.Let her say no.The idea of sharing her story with the world went against everything in Dani.
“Let me think about it,” Alex said.
“I think it’s a bad idea,” Ben said. “You could get yourself killed.”
