The slamming of a fist causes me to gasp in fake dismay.

“Enough!” Martin shouts, staring me down. “Stop wasting our time with nonsense.Tell us about Mingan taking you!” he demands, infusing his words with command. My wolf rushes to the surface, no longer content with sitting in the background.

My vision sharpens, and I instinctively know my eyes are glowing just like Cain’s.

Without removing my stare from his, I lean back in the chair, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Didn’t anyone teach you it’s not polite to shout at a woman? Even less polite to try to use command to get your way. Unless you would like your throat removed from your body, you will not try that again,” I say, allowing the words to flow from my wolf to him.

His jaw drops, and his eyes bulge. It's comical how surprised he is, and I bask in the moment before attempting to use command for myself.

Just as I open my mouth to speak the words, the door opens, pulling everyone's attention.

“Apologies for being late. As I wasn’t notified that one of my clients was in custody and another was being questioned, it took longer to get here than usual. That being said, this interview is over. Any further questions will be directed through me at an assigned deposition,” he says, turning to me. Brielle, if you would come with me, please,” he finishes.

“You can’t just take her!” Martin shouts, standing in his outrage at how the whole situation unraveled.

“Unless she is under arrest for breaking the Lycan Constitutional Code, I’m very sure I can,” he says, ushering me out the door without another word.

“Impeccable timing,” I say as we walk down the hall.

“Sometimes the Fates are looking out for us. Let’s go find your Mate,” he says, and we walk back to the front office with a newfound purpose.

Chapter 36

Cain

It’s nearly morning when one of the enforcer guards comes to get me. I haven’t been released from the silver cuffs since they arrested me last night, and the skin underneath them is burned and blistered. Apparently, locking me in a silver cage wasn’t enough.

Honestly, it probably wasn’t.

They had muted my wolf with the same serum we give wolves in interrogation to keep them from accessing their wolvesand mind-linking with their Alphas, effectively keeping me from contacting not only Dante but Bri, too.

I could still feel her through the bond, but none of my messages penetrated the medical block.

She was safe, so I sat tight and didn’t fight anyone.

Even as this guard walked me to the interview rooms, I kept myself in control.

My wolf was fighting it.

I felt him slowly pushing back through, which meant I’d be able to send messages soon.

Stupid of them not to redose me this morning. I’m not only an Alpha but one with a Fated Mate, which only added to my strength and ability. My guess is this dose usually lasted twenty-four hours, and I’d only been here about ten.

The closer we get to the room, the more I feel her. She’s close. I chance sending a mind-link message to her.

Cain: You doing ok, Firefly?

Surprise and relief flood the bond, and I smile at her reaction.

Bri: Yeah, Noah and I are just waiting. They said they were getting you. I can feel you getting closer. How come you didn’t answer me last night?

Her question pulls at me, and I wish we had more time to discuss how this would go.

Cain: They muted my wolf and my abilities, so I was less of a threat. It’s wearing off now.

Bri: Did they hurt you? I couldn’t feel you at all. I was worried.
