“You were shot. Now isn’t the time to relax,” I say to him. “No. Don’t sit up.”
He waves away my caution and shoves himself up with his good arm. The movement makes him wince.
“We need medicine for the pain.” I point to Anton. “She can get it for us.”
“Who?” Roberto asks, looking between us.
“The woman he just dumped in his guest room,” Anton answers with a lift to his lips.
“The room was empty,” I counter.
He laughs. “Most of the rooms in this fucking house are empty.”
But she didn’t belong in any of them; she belongs exactly where I put her.
“I can keep an eye on her better there,” I explain, not that I need to give reason to my methods. If he keeps the smirk up for much longer, I’ll have to smack it off of him.
“Sure.” Anton gives me an exaggerated nod.
“Is this girl the one who stitched me up?” Roberto lifts his hand between us.
“Yes,” I tell him, shoving my irritation aside. Stephania is needed to make sure Roberto gets through this without further incident. That’s all. Just part of the team.
“Did you see the guy who came in through the back door?” I get to the crux of the situation. We need to find out who tried to take us down, tried to go after the Mancini family.
“Yeah, I saw him,” Roberto says, grimacing as he moves again.
“Keep still,” Anton chastises him. “Sergio will have some meds in his room. I’ll get them. Charlie, come too,” Anton calls.
With a grunt Charlie follows.
“Okay, tell me,” I say, preparing myself.
“I don’t know who he was, I only saw his face,” Roberto states. “Fuck, this burns.” He lightly touches the bandages on his shoulder.
“We’re getting you something for the pain,” I remind him. “You’d recognize him if you saw him again?”
“Hell, yeah, I would. The asshole shot Sergio.” His voice cracks.
“He’s not going to get away with it, but we’ll need to get more information. The Mancinis are looking into it as well. His son took a bullet.”
“Jimmy, yeah. I saw, right before I was hit.” Roberto nodded and leaned his head back against the pillows.
“You need to get some rest. I’m going to bring the doctor in later to check you over, make sure everything looks like it should.”
“This doctor, what are you going to do with her?” Roberto asks. He’s always been the soft one of the family. It’s what happens when you’re raised holding onto Mama’s apron strings for too long.
“You leave that worry to me.” I point a finger at him.
“Does Sarah know about this afternoon?” he asks about his girlfriend. They’ve been dating for two years. He’s ready to ask her to marry him, but she’s not been brought into the family yet. Him getting shot—it’s going to be difficult to explain.
“No.”
He frowns. “I have to tell her, Vincenzo. I can’t hide things from her anymore.”
“And if the truth sends her running? What then, Roberto? She’s out there knowing things about our family that can be used against us?” I shake my head. “No. Not yet.”
“Maria knows things,” he argues with me.
