I let out a hard breath and face the grave again.
“You have until tonight to turn yourself in. Don’t make me have to step in,” I say without looking at him and turn away. Roberto joins me and we walk away from the grave, leaving Anton to get a grip on what he has to do.
I look toward my car. Charlie’s standing outside the car waiting for me, shaking his head. He points down the lane and I follow his finger.
Stephania is talking with Detective Anderson.
“What the fuck.”
Chapter Nineteen
––––––––
Stephania
“It’ll be good to get back to work,” I say to Detective Anderson.
“I bet.” His hazel eyes move away from and over my shoulder. Following his attention line, I cringe. Vincenzo is stalking to us. His overcoat flaps around his legs as he moves, giving him an even more dangerous appearance.
“Vincenzo,” I say before he can even get a word out. “Detective Anderson was just saying hi.”
His dark glare settles on Anderson. “Is that right?”
“Yeah. Stephania and I know each other from the hospital,” Anderson says with a tilt to his head. “I’m not sure how she knows you though.” He turns his question to me.
My tongue doesn’t move. How can I explain my relationship with Vincenzo? His captive? After the last few nights, that label doesn’t sit right. To say I’m his girlfriend seems like a mismatched puzzle piece. What am I to him?
More important, what do I want to be to him?
Free of him?
I had my chance. I could have walked up to Anderson and told him everything. I’d be free right now. He’d have me in his car and Vincenzo wouldn’t be able to touch me.
I can still say it. I can tell him right now that I’m not here willingly.
Only... that’s not true.
