“I’ll deal with her,” he promises. “But what about the doctor?”

“What about her? You brought her here to take care of Roberto, so that’s what she’s doing.”

“From your bedroom?” he asks with a waggle to his brows.

“Where I keep her isn’t your business. Did you get the camera footage from the café?”

Anton reaches into his suit jacket and retrieves a flash drive. “I downloaded everything from all the cameras.”

“Everything’s cleaned up over there, right?”

“Yes. Clean as a whistle. I also ordered him a new table and some new espresso machines for the hassle. He seemed happy enough.”

I huffed. Tony kept our arrangement because it would ruin his business not to, not because he had any loyalty to our family. We use his back room as neutral territory to meet when necessary, and he gets to skip any sort of protection money we’d need to keep his business safe from vultures.

“Good. Have you looked?” I pick up the flash drive.

“No, haven’t had time.” He shrugs.

I check the time. “Roberto needs another dose, go on up to see him so I can have Stephania get in there once you’re done.”

“Why not let her come in while we’re here?” Anton asks with a hint of teasing to his tone.

“Because,” I say and open the laptop again, dismissing him.

“Okay, but I’m not stupid, Vincenzo. You’ve never had a woman locked away in your room before. And you’ve never felt the need to keep a doctor hostage either.”

“We had Sergio,” I remark.

“You had other docs on the payroll. None of them needed to be locked up here,” he points out.

He’s not wrong, and it’s a point Stephania has made ten times over. But it didn’t change the fact that she was here, and she wasn’t going anywhere.

“You let me worry about Stephania.” I pick up the flash drive and slip it into the computer. “I have work to do.” I look at him over the top of the screen.

He shakes his head but takes the hint. “I’ll go check on Roberto and get out of your hair.”

“Do that. Thanks.” I dismiss him and double click the flash drive icon on the computer, opening the video.

“Mr. Manetto.” One of the maids enters my office as Anton leaves.

“Yes?”

“We tried to bring up lunch to your room as you requested, but she refused it.”

“Refused it how?” I ask, already standing from my desk.

“She said she wasn’t hungry and wouldn’t let us into the room.”

“I gave you the key this morning,” I remind her. Megan has been on my staff for several years now. Nothing inside my bedroom would surprise her.

“Yes, but every time we unlocked it, she locked it again.” A small smile pulled at her lips. Solidarity amongst women, I suppose.

“Where is the tray?” I ask, making my way to the door.

“In the kitchen.”

“The bedroom will be empty for half an hour, bring the tray back up and leave it,” I inform her. My little pet can’t go hungry, and if she won’t eat the traditional way, I’ll have to help her along. “Oh. And bring up a small bowl with a glass of milk as well.”
