She’d never give him another chance.

And he didn’t deserve one.

Chapter Thirty-Three

“I’m just pulling in now. I’ll call you as soon as I’m settled.” Erika shifted her sedan into park.

“Try to have some fun while you’re there,” Christy suggested for the fourth time since Erika laid everything out.

Erika laughed. “I’m working, not playing. I’ll call later.”

Through the windshield she noticed Devin and Kara step out onto the front porch of the main house. Kara waved at her with a bright smile, which helped lighten the weight of the rock sitting in Erika’s stomach.

After hanging up with Christy, Erika grabbed her bag and made her way up to the house.

“Hi.” She smiled at Devin. “Thank you for letting me come out for a few days.” She dropped her rolling suitcase and offered her hand.

Devin took it, shaking it gently before returning her grin.

“I was glad to see you moved positions. Never been a big fan of the society rags.”

“Thanks. Yes, it was definitely a good move.”

“You’re here alone?” Kara asked, leaning to the side to get another look at the car.

“Yes. I don’t have—I mean, I didn’t think to bring anyone else—will that be off-putting do you think to the guests? I won’t pester anyone to talk to me that doesn’t want to, but I’d love if a few would give some insight on their experiences here,” Erika rambled.

“We made an announcement this morning that you would be arriving. We have a lanyard for you to wear so they know who you are. If they don’t want to talk to you, they won’t. It’s up to them. But no photographs.” Devin pointed at the camera case next to her suitcase. “Of guests anyway, you can take pictures of the buildings and play areas but not the guests.”

Erika nodded. “Perfectly reasonable.” She took a long breath. “I know this is a little awkward. I’m sure Dax mentioned what led to our breakup, and I just want to assure you that I am not going to print anything that you don’t approve. You’ll be able to see the article before it goes to final approval with my editor and only once they have your okay will it get posted.”

Devin frowned. “I’m not worried about that at all.”

“Okay.” Erika clapped her hands. “Good. Uh, I think I’ll change out of these slacks and into some jeans then wander around a bit? We can set up a time for your interview for tomorrow? Does after breakfast sound okay?”

“Perfect,” Kara answered. “We have you in the cabin in the back row. Next to the one you stayed in before. Just finished it up a few weeks ago.”
