But what did he really want? To take a chance on her? On another deep connection that could end up with him in ruins again.

“What did you mean then?” A simple question, given plainly in a soft voice.

“I wasn’t thinking when I said it. Trevor was making a jab at me and I responded. It wasn’t sincere, I was not talking about you. Nothing about these past few days has even come close to being mindless.” He let out a long breath, running his thumb over her cheekbone. “It’s been a long time since I could say that with certainty. I don’t know what exactly this is, what you want from all of this, but I promise you it’s more than just sex for me—more than just a kinky vacation.”

Her brow wrinkled, like she was weighing his words in her mind. “Maybe when you’re done dealing with your brother, we can figure the rest out then,” she said.

Slowly his lips turned up and he smiled at her. “I would like that, yes.” He pulled her forward, crushing his mouth against hers and not letting her up for breath until he was sure she’d gotten the picture.

She was his.

“Stay home. Not a foot outside.”

“I promise.” She smiled up at him, a mischievous dimple popping up on her cheek.

“I’m gonna walk you up, make sure Christy is home before I leave.” He released her and popped open his door.

She’d be safe at her own place. Whatever Corbin was up to had nothing to do with her. But he needed to get to the bottom of it.

Whatever he was up to had to do with the Persuccio family—and nothing good ever came out of that shit show.

With Erika tucked safelyaway in her apartment, Dax continued his search for his brother. Corbin still wasn’t answering his calls, and his apartment was empty. Dax headed to the club next.

The club was quiet when Dax walked in through the back door. A few employees were scuttling around the kitchens prepping for the evening already, but otherwise it was a still atmosphere.

Robert stepped out of the security office. Relief washed over his expression when his gaze met Dax’s.

“Thank fuck,” he said and slapped Dax on the shoulder.

Dax forced a laugh. “Been that good around here the past few days?”

“Man, the shit that has been going down.” Robert shook his head. “You need to talk with Corbin, like right away. He’s getting too chummy with Joey for my comfort. I had three fights break out last night in the middle of the dance floor. All Joey’s crew.”

Dax worked his fingers into a fist. “Corbin around? I stopped at his place, but he wasn’t home.”
