She wasn’t sleeping at all.

He shook her leg gently. “C’mon, open up. We’ll be at my place in twenty minutes.”

Her eyes flew open with his announcement and she shot up into sitting. “Why your place?” she asked with wide eyes.

“Because until I can get a hold of Corbin and find out what the hell this has all really been about, I’d rather you not be alone at your apartment.” He gripped the steering wheel tighter, sensing a storm blowing in.

“I’m safe enough at home. Christy is off today anyway, so I won’t be alone,” she argued.

“That doesn’t change my decision,” he said, keeping his eyes focused on the road. If he looked at her, saw the defiance in her eyes, he might say something that would only fuel her fire instead of stamp it out.

“Your decision?” she asked softly and leaned her head back. “I think we’ve gone past that point, Dax.”

“What does that mean?” he asked with a controlled voice. He didn’t have a tight hold on it, but he controlled himself well enough.

“We’re back in the city. You go your way and I go mine,” she said, waving her hand at the window.

Dax reworked his grip on the steering wheel and turned off the highway. His apartment was only a few more blocks north.

“Dax, I mean it.”

“I know you do, but like you said, you put my stuff in your bag. We’ll sort it out at my apartment while I’m getting a hold of Corbin.” He turned down another street.

She shimmied around her seat and kept her attention anywhere but him. That was fine. He’d get to the bottom of whatever was eating her once they were in his apartment.

As he pulled his car into the garage attached to his building, his phone started dancing in the console.

“Hello,” he answered, turning onto the ramp that would take him to his parking space.

“Dax,” Trevor said in a heavy breath, like he’d been running. “Devin told me you guys left this morning.”

Dax parked the car and pulled the phone up to his ear. “Yeah, we just got home. You okay?”

“Yeah, sorry, running late for work,” he explained. “I just got a call a minute ago from my buddy at the PD down there. Corbin’s name has been added to their list.”

Dax’s chest had his heart in a death grip. “What list?”

“He’s been tagged as a member of Joey’s crew.”

Dax closed his eyes and inhaled slow. “Is that why he wanted me out of Chicago?”

“I don’t know, but the club is being watched.”

“I’m gonna get Erika somewhere safe then track him down.”

“Let me know if you want help. I’m sure Blake would step in here,” Trevor offered.

“No, no one else. I’ll deal with this. He’s my brother.” Dax didn’t know Blake well enough to drag him into his family drama. He knew he was a standup guy, and he would be at his side if Dax called him, but Dax wasn’t at that point yet. He could handle Corbin on his own.

“Okay, just be careful.”

“I will. Thanks.” Dax ended the call and let loose a frustrated breath.

“Family troubles?” Erika asked, her journalist voice back in full force.

He glanced over at her. “Christy is home today?”

“That’s what I said.” She nodded.
