“Oh?” Her eyebrows raised.
“Yeah, I’ll explain later, let’s get some grub.” He linked his fingers through hers and tugged her toward the kitchen.
He’d tell her everything he knew, and they’d make a decision. But one thing he knew for sure, he wouldn’t get to the bottom of anything tucked away in Michigan anymore.
Chapter Twenty-Six
––––––––
“Let’s go back tonight,” Erika wrapped her arms around her middle.
“Back? Like Chicago?” Dax asked, pushing a log into the fire he’d built in the back yard of the cabin.
“Yeah. Why wait another day?” She leaned forward, letting the heat of the flames warm her skin. Dax sat across the small fire pit, staring at her through the dancing fire.
“It’s after midnight,” Dax said. “And I’ve been drinking.”
“I only had one glass of wine,” she shrugged. After overhearing his words in the living room she’d lost her appetite and her thirst. Getting distance became her new goal.
“You’re not driving all the way back to Chicago after being up all day. Why are you in a hurry?” He propped his boot on the stone ring and poked at the firewood more.
“Just want my own bed is all,” she said.
Mindless sex and complete freedom
She blinked away the pain starting to bubble up at remembering the words, at the cavalier way he said them.
Mindless sex.
She wouldn’t be giving him any more of that, but his freedom—she’d give him that as soon as possible.
“I could probably catch a train back. I’m sure there has to be an Amtrak station around here.” She pulled her feet up onto the camping chair and hugged her knees to her chest.
“What’s going on, Erika?” he asked, the same dominant tone he’d been using since she’d met him. And even with the dark bruise forming on her heart, it still made the butterflies dance in her stomach.
“Nothing. It’s just, if it’s safe to go home, let’s go. I have work to get back to, and you have the club to sort out.” She rested her chin on her knee.
