Fuck! Why hadn’t he picked up a box while he’d been in town buying the battery? Talk about a rookie mistake. ‘I still don’t have any protection,’ he apologised.

‘It’s okay,’ she whispered, sliding her hand between their bodies to his groin. ‘I’m safe. Are you?’

All he could do was nod as she wrestled with the buckle of his belt. Once he was free, he hitched her up onto the bonnet of her car and then yanked her shorts and underwear down her legs.

‘God, you’re a treat,’ he said as he spread her thighs.

He dipped a finger inside her just to be certain she was ready and when she cried out in bliss, her head falling back, he drew her legs around him, and as her heels dug into his back, he thrust inside her.

‘Mark!’ She gripped his shoulders, clinging to him as they moved together.

Maggie squawked off in the distance and Rookie stared up at them, wondering what the heck was happening, but neither of them noticed any of it as they came together as if they’d invented sex.

‘Wow.’ Mark felt like a rag doll but held Gabriela close as she collapsed against his chest.

‘That’s exactly what I was thinking,’ she muttered.

He put his finger on her chin and lifted her face to look at him. ‘This can’t be the last time. I know neither of us are looking for another relationship right now, but even if our lives aren’t compatible, by God,weare!’

‘Yeah. I know.’ She panted, her chest still heaving in time with his own racing pulse.

They were silent a few long moments, simply holding each other, as they contemplated the impossible.

‘What if we just take it one day—or rather night—at a time?’ she suggested eventually.

‘You mean we keep doing this until you leave?’

‘Exactly. It’s probably a stupid idea, but as you said, we’re both single, consenting adults. We both know the deal. Nothing more than a fling.’

‘What about Luna?’

Gabriela pursed her lips. ‘She’s going to make things harder, but if you’re prepared to wait until she’s asleep at night, then I can sneak out for a few hours. Once she’s out, she’s out for the count. Although not tonight. After the last few nights, I need a good night’s sleep to get my energy back.’

He laughed. ‘Fair enough, although I’ll miss you.’

She smiled. ‘Does that mean you’re accepting my illicit proposal?’

As if there was any answer but yes.

They sealed the deal with another kiss.

As Mark watched Gabriela’s car fade into the distance he couldn’t wipe the smile from his face. Then his phone buzzed, and he reached into his shorts and scowled when the name of his ex flashed on the screen.

What the hell did she want?

Although they had to wait until they’d been separated officially for a year before they could apply for a divorce, she’d already moved in with Alex, which made it more than a done deal in his mind.

Rejecting the call, he shoved the phone back in his pocket. After the magical twenty-four hours he’d just shared with Gabriela, the last thing he wanted to do was ruin it all by talking to Tahlia.

Any further contact could be done through their lawyers.

Chapter Eighteen

‘Mum, is that Mark?’

Gabi looked up from her book as Luna shook her hair out like a dog, sprinkling sea water all over the pages. A hot flush zapped through her at the sight of Mark casually striding along the sand in their direction, Rookie tugging on her leash. He was barefoot, wearing navy board shorts and a white t-shirt with a logo she couldn’t quite make out from this distance.

Gabi’s mouth went dry at the sight.
