“Penny for your thoughts,” Kelly says as I lounge on the balcony of our oceanfront suite. She comes up behind me and wraps her arms around my waist.
“Hey, beautiful,” I murmur as she presses a gentle kiss to my cheek. “Just enjoying the peace.”
“This place is paradise.”
I turn around and gaze up at her, my heart swelling with love. “I’m so glad we could get away, just the two of us.”
“Me too.”
I tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
“And you deserve this, Kelly. All the hard work you’ve been putting in at the office has really paid off.”
I can’t help but smile. Just a few months ago, she was promoted to marketing director at the firm she’s been with for the past four years. It’s been a lot of long hours and stress, but the new position comes with a substantial raise and more flexibility.
“I’m really proud of myself. It feels good to be recognized for my efforts.”
I nod. “Speaking of that, I’ve been doing some thinking...” I pause, taking her hands in mine. “I know how important your career is to you, and I don’t want to hold you back. So I’ve decided that I’m going to retire.”
Her eyes widen in surprise. “Retire? But Mac, you love coaching. I don’t want you to give that up on my account.”
“It’s not just about you, Kelly.” I take her hand and bring it to my lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “I’m getting older.”
“Forty seven is not old.”
I smile. “And I want to spend more time with you and our kids. I need to be there for all the important moments, without having to worry about my schedule at the rink.”
Tears coat her eyes. “Mac, I...I don’t know what to say.” She wraps her arms around me, burying her face in my chest. “You’re the most amazing man I’ve ever known.”
I stand and pick her up, her legs wrap around my waist instinctively. “There’s also another reason.”
Her gaze locks on mine. “Yeah?”
“I want one more baby.”
“Mac. But…work!”
“Like I told you. I’m going to retire, and be a full-time dad. We have a home that’s paid for. Money in the bank. I just—”
“You really want this?” she interrupts. “I’m scared you’ll hate being retired.”
“I want you and my family more than anything, Kelly.”
“Okay,” she murmurs. “Let’s do it.”
“Really?”
“I was going to buy some condoms. Now I don’t have to.”
“Condoms?” I repeat. We haven’t ever needed to use them.
She nods. “I forgot to bring my birth control.”
I lay her down on the bed, dragging her bikini bottoms down her legs and sliding my tongue through her slit. “It was meant to be.”
She moans as my tongue darts inside her, teasing her as my finger traces circles around her clit.
“Oh, Mac,” she moans, arching her back as a visible shiver runs through her body. “You know just how to make me feel good.”
