If Only Books Talked

The Naughty Things They Would Say

As soon as we step outside, I take a deep breath, letting the crisp air fill my lungs. The adrenaline still courses through my veins, making my fingers tingle with anticipation. Tomorrow’s going to be a huge deal, and I need to be ready.

“I have no interest in attending my last class today,” I announce, glancing over at Derek and Sebastian. “I should really get some practice in before tomorrow.”

Derek snorts, clearly amused. “Haven’t seen you use your wand in, what, two years?”

Sebastian raises an eyebrow, looking curious. “And why is that?” he asks.

Derek just shoots him a look—one that saysfearwithout actually needing to say the word. Sebastian immediately retracts his question, holding up his hands as if to say, never mind, I don’t need to know.

“I’m notthatscary,” I mutter, though the smirk on my face betrays how much I enjoy their reactions.

Before I can say anything else, Derek’s phone buzzes, and he pulls it out to check the message. His expression shifts, and he sighs. “Parents just messaged. Apparently, they were called about the... incident. So, I’m heading home.”

I can’t help but feel a pang of worry. “Are they mad?”

He shrugs, though I can see the tension in his shoulders. “Probably. But I’ll deal with it.”

He leans down, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek before turning to leave. “Don’t blow anything up while I’m gone, okay?”

“No promises,” I call after him, watching as he walks away. I’m concerned about how things will go with his parents, but I know Derek can handle himself. Once Derek is out of sight, I turn to Sebastian. “I’m going to need your help during the next class. You up for it?”

Sebastian grins, the mischief in his eyes lighting up. “I don’t pay attention in class anyway. You know that.”

“Yeah, yeah, I do,” I say, shaking my head. “Good thing you’re useful for other things.”

He laughs, nudging me playfully as we start heading back toward my dorm. “Oh,other things? Do tell.”

“You know exactly what I mean,” I retort, giving him a teasing glare. “But we’ve got a half hour to kill before the next class, so... back to the dorm?”

Sebastian mock-groans. “Ugh, more waiting? You’re torturing me, witch.”

I chuckle, already feeling more relaxed with just him by my side. “Oh, trust me, I’m not done torturing you yet.”

With that, we head back to my dorm room, the anticipation for tomorrow still buzzing in the back of my mind. The duel with Kyla is coming, and I’ve got to be prepared—for whatever she’s going to throw at me.

When we get to the dorm, I open the door, stepping inside as Sebastian follows closely behind. He flops down onto the bedimmediately, sprawling out like he owns the place. I raise an eyebrow, watching him make himself at home.

“Comfortable?” I ask dryly.

“Always,” he replies, shooting me that cocky grin I’ve come to know so well.

I roll my eyes and start digging through my drawers for my wand, the familiar weight of it grounding me as I pull it out. Tomorrow is going to be a real test of my abilities. I haven’t wielded this thing in so long, but it feels right in my hand, like it never left.

Sebastian watches me silently from the bed, his eyes following my every movement. “You really think she stands a chance against you?”

I pause, glancing over at him. “It’s not about whether she stands a chance. It’s about making sure she doesn’t get away with what she’s done. She stole from me, hurt the people I care about... and she thinks she can walk all over me. That’s what this is about.”

Sebastian nods, his expression more serious than usual. “Well, I’ll be there. Whatever you need.”

I smile, appreciating his support more than he probably realizes. “Thanks. I might need you to help me practice some defense spells later.”

He grins again, the mischievous glint back in his eyes. “Defense, huh? Sounds fun. Just make sure you don’t hex me too hard.”

I laugh, already feeling lighter. “Oh, I make no promises.” I twirl my wand between my fingers, the wood warm against my skin. “There’s one spell I need to perfect before tomorrow, but… it’s not in my grimoire.”
