“Are you sure?” Daddy asked.

“Yes, Sir. I’m sure.”

Daddy started walking toward the front of the store, going out to his car. Rainey heard the rumble of a motorcycle but was too caught up with Daddy buckling her in to take notice.

“Daddy is going to take care of you. Don’t you worry.”

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

RAINEY

Rainey had been wringing her hands together, trying to stay calm as they drove back to his house. Daddy had kept the bandage on his face the whole ride, even though she knew he didn’t need it.

They hadn’t spoken the whole way to his house. She didn’t know if he needed time to process everything, and Rainey didn’t know what to say. She thought that if she spoke, she would burst into tears. Daddy didn’t need to worry about that while he was driving.

It was a short drive from her coffee shop. It also didn’t take them long to get back to his house.

“Little girl?” Daddy asked.

She looked outside and realized they had pulled into his driveway. How long had she been staring at the dashboard? Had it been a while?

“I’m sorry.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Just lost in my head.”

So many thoughts. She wanted to exaggerate and say she would never recover from this, but she knew she would. It might take a while, but she would.

“Baby.”

“I thought I was going to lose you. I know I wasn’t, but it was a thought that turned into a worry. So many things could have happened, and I could have lost you. I’m not ready to lose you,” she blurted out.

Rainey wasn’t looking at Daddy as she spoke. She was already on the verge of tears, and she knew once she looked into his eyes, those tears would stream down her face.

“Oh, Little girl. I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Daddy got out of the car and made his way over to her side. Opening the door, he helped her unbuckle before wrapping his arms around her.

“You’re okay. I’m okay. I’m right here. Nothing is going to happen.”

“I know,” she whispered.

“How about we go take a bath and we can just relax in there? Just you and me. We’ll have skin-to-skin contact, and you can snuggle into me.”

She nodded and wrapped her arms around Daddy. It was weird with her bump in the way. She knew she wouldn’t be able to do this much longer.

“I love holding you like this.”

“I love this as well.”

“We can sit like this in a chair. I know your bump gets a little in the way, but we can make it work. Once you have ourbaby, we can do this as much as you want. I can carry you like this as much as you want.”

Rainey loved the idea.

“Please.”

“Anytime. Just let Daddy know.”
