“I’m okay,” I said, lifting my hips. “More.”

He gave me what I wanted, pulling out and thrusting forward again, but I suspected he still held back. It wasn’t long before I felt another orgasm building. Wrapping my legs around his waist, I took him deeper.

Cole groaned. “Fuck, Sydney, you feel so good. I could stay here forever.”

I wished we could stay like this forever, too. Just the two of us, connected in the most intimate way possible. No werewolves that hated me, no pack rules stopping us from being together. Sadness didn’t get to surface because my second orgasm hit me harder than the first. Holding on to Cole, I rode the waves of pleasure, amazed by the things I felt. He followed me over the edge, his body shuddering against mine.

He collapsed beside me, and our combined ragged breathing filled the room. When I recovered, I turned to look at Cole, only to find him staring at me. His eyebrows were drawn together, and his eyes clouded with uncertainty. I understood that look because it was the same thing I felt. Worry. What happened now that we’d crossed this line, knowing we couldn’t be together?

Chapter 21 Sydney

Macy appeared in the doorway, escorted by Dominic. I sprinted toward her, practically launching myself at her.

“Oomph!” she grunted and then laughed, her arms wrapping around me.

“I missed you,” I said, still holding on to her.

“I missed you too.”

It was so good to see another face other than Damian’s, Alex’s, and Dominic’s. I was starting to really love the guys, but I was tired of seeing just them day in and day out. Besides, Dominic, who was currently on bodyguard duty, was more of a brooding character rather than a jolly conversationalist.

“It’s so good to see you,” I said, finally letting go of her. “Brief phone conversations weren’t doing it for me anymore.”

“I know, right.” She grinned and stepped back. “Let me take a good look at you. You look good. Healthy.” She swept the living room of Cole’s apartment. “Cole had enough sense to keep you stashed in one of his nice residences. Kudos to him. I told him I’d kick his ass if he weren’t taking proper care of you.”

My eyebrows shot up. It was hard to imagine anyone speaking to Cole like that. He had such a formidable air. “You and Cole must be closer than I thought,” I said—more to myself than to Macy.

“I hope you’re not jealous,” she returned. “Cole and I are friends and nothing more.”

“No, I’m not jealous. I just find it strange…” How she had such close, easy interactions with him and didn’t know what he was. Or did she? Neither Cole nor Macy ever acknowledged how much they knew about each other. I was also curious about how they’d met and why she and Damian skirted around each other like they were both contagious.

“Go on,” she urged.

“Never mind,” I said, glancing at Dominic, who had locked the door and retreated to the dining room to give us a little privacy. Although with his acute hearing, privacy was still limited.

Macy smirked, threw her handbag onto the center table, and plopped down on a sofa, totally at ease in Cole’s space.

“Come on, Sydney. I can tell you have a lot of questions.” She spread her arms. “Ask away.”

As I sat beside her, I contemplated. I had a strong feeling Macy was in on the supernatural world, and it was time I got the confirmation. “Okay. You know about shifters and stuff, don’t you?”

She smiled. “I do.”

“I knew it! There was no way you didn’t with all those strange customers that come into the diner at night. What is that all about, anyway?”

“My diner is neutral ground,” she shared. “A lot of humans, along with supernaturals— no matter their species—can come there and unwind without worrying about fights and animosity between clans, covens, packs, and so on. Cole helped to establish my space as a safe spot. He polices the area, and everyone knows that. Not many are willing to cross one of the strongest Alphas in the city.”

I glanced at Macy. “One of the strongest? He’s never told me that.” Not that we shared many things.

“He’s also one of the humblest,” Macy added.

“I want to know everything about your relationship with Cole, Damian, Violet, and the others. And I want to know why you didn’t even bat an eyelash when I told you I had to take an indefinite leave from work. You haven’t even asked me why I’m shacking up with the man you sent me to for help when I first got to this city.”

Macy laughed. “I wondered when your curiosity would get the best of you.”

“The curiosity has been killing me, but it’s not like we’ve gotten the chance to see each other. I’ve barely seen you in weeks.”

She nodded. “I already knew everything, including that Cole is your mate, and he…” She sighed and eyed me with sympathy.
