I freeze, except for the throbbing in my pussy.
She leans closer. "If you were into girls, I would take you away from Dax."
I stare at her.
She giggles. "I told you not to get weird."
My butterflies flutter harder, confusing me.
She giggles again. "Don't get weird. I know we're just friends. But I'm telling you because you need to own your power. And Dax is proud of you, so you need to go out there and strut it and not show any signs of homophobia, okay?"
"I'm not a homophobe," I state.
"I know you're not. But you have to go prove it to the sisterhood."
"They think I'm a homophobe?" I ask in horror.
She glances around us, then lowers her voice, admitting, "Only two girls think that."
"Who?" I question.
"I can't tell you. But they heard about what happened on the lake the first day you met Marcey and Cindy. It was before we were friends. I'm sorry. It's my fault. Please don't be mad at me." Her eyes turn glassy.
My insides rage. I hate remembering how they called me a homophobe. I reaffirm, "I'm not a homophobe."
"I know you're not. So go out there, play the role, and show the sorority you're not. When tonight's over, you'll be in the sisterhood. You and Dax will own the campus. And my father will welcome you into our family with open arms."
Something about owning the campus with Dax excites me. I don't know why. I've never needed to be prom queen or even popular. But knowing Dax's family will welcome me makes me determined to do whatever it takes to become a Gamma.
A bell rings.
Avery leans into my ear, and more tingles appear under her hot breath. "I'll give you a final piece of advice if you want."
"Please do."
"Pretend you're kissing Dax. That's all you have to do. Pretend that Lilly is Dax."
I swallow hard at the thought of kissing Lilly.
She puts her fingers over my lips, firmly restating, "Ivy, pretend Lilly is Dax."
A tense moment passes, and the bell rings again. She chirps, "Got to go. You're going to do great." She gives me a quick peck on the lips, surprising me, and takes off before I can say anything.
Nervousness floods me. I want to run, but my brain won't let me. My feet won't move.
I have to do this.
It's just a stupid scene.
Lights turn on, peeking through the curtains, and a girl's voice says in the microphone, "Time to start. Will the actresses please take the stage?"
I remain frozen in place.
Lilly steps next to me and grabs my hand. "Come on, Ivy, let's get this over with."
I turn toward her. "You're okay with this?"
She shrugs. "Yeah. No big deal. Let's get it done and then we'll be part of the sisterhood forever."
