“I do.”

“You look amazing, you’re glowing.”

“I feel like it,” she said. “It’s electrifying.”

“Where to?” Chase asked.

Knox looked at her and shrugged. “My place,” she said. “I live in the elf barracks on the ground floor.”

“We’ll walk with you there, and then we’ll head to dinner in the cafeteria,” Maverick said.

“Thank you,” she said.

Knox nodded at them and then whispered, “Walk fast, Sugar Plum. We’ve got a lot to talk about.”

She grinned and picked up the pace, laughing as he let out a growly purr and lifted her into his arms, taking off at a jog. She looped her arms around his neck and nuzzled his ear, whispering, “I like you how you think, Knox.”

“You’ll like it even more once we’re alone.”

They reached the elf barracks and said goodbye to his friends. She rested her head on his shoulder as he walked down the hall to her apartment.

She couldn’t wait to get him inside her place.

After all, they had alotto talk about.

Knox carried his beautiful mate into her apartment. The elf barracks were similar to the ones the Guardians used, but instead of small gathering rooms, each floor had its own large multi-purpose room, which doubled as not only a game room and hangout spot, but a communal kitchen for those who didn’t want to do their own cooking.

Her apartment was on the ground floor. There were a few floors above the ground floor and below. When he’d carried her across the threshold, he set her down and shut the door.

They were in a small foyer next to the eat-in kitchen. She flipped on the overhead light, and they hung up their coats and took off their shoes and outdoor gear.

“Are you hungry or thirsty?” she asked.

“I’m good, thanks.”

She gave him a soft smile, her blue eyes sparkling. She let out a soft laugh. “I’m feeling really nervous, but I also feel like I shouldn’t because we’re mates.”

He was feeling a bit of nerves himself, mostly because he wanted everything from this point forward to be spectacular so she didn’t regret a moment of their lives together.

Taking her hand, he brought it to his lips and then gently pulled her close, settling his other hand on the small of her back. She fit perfectly against him and she smelled so amazing, like fresh from the oven sugar cookies.

“Let’s not worry about anything tonight but getting to know each other. No expectations, no plans, just you and me, spending time together.”

“Will you stay tonight? So we don’t have to say goodbye when we just met?”

His leopard let out a purr. “I would love to. And I’d like to ask you to take tomorrow off if you can, so we can have more time together.”

“You will too?” she asked, brow arched.

“Definitely.”

“I need to call my dad, too, so he doesn’t worry.”

They both parted but stayed close enough to keep their fingers linked as they made their calls on the satellite phones provided by the security team. He spoke quickly to Maverick, who relayed the information to Chase.

“No problem,” Maverick said. “We’ll reach out to the other Guardians to get your shift covered, we might need to get an elf to fill in.”

“Just the one day?” Chase asked.
