“He’s my dad. There’s always stuff going on with him.” She was dodging the question. I could tell it in her voice when she said, “But he never really talks about it.”
“Yeah, dads can be like that.”
“Yes, which is why I wanted to check on him. It’s the only way I can be sure that he’s okay.”
“Okay. Do what you need to do. Just be careful.”
“You seem to know something I don’t.”
“I have the same feeling about you.”
Her eyes widened, and I thought she was going to press me to say more, but she didn’t. Instead, she feigned a smile and said, “You have nothing to worry about. Besides, I can see your mother while I’m there and tell her how great you’re doing.”
“That’d be good. I’m sure she’d like that.”
“What about you? What are you going to be up to while I’m gone?”
“I have my rehab appointment, and then, I’ll probably head over to the clubhouse and check in on the guys. See how they’ve been doing.”
“So, when do I get to check out the infamous Fury clubhouse?”
“Whenever you want.” Between her time at the hospital and here at the house, Toni had already met most of the guys, and they all seemed taken with her. “For that matter, we can go as soon as you get back.”
“I’d like that.” She leaned over and gave me a quick kiss on the lips. “I should get going.”
“Call me as soon as you get there.”
“Will do.”
She paused at the door like she didn’t want to go, and it took all I had to resist the urge to call her back to bed. But I knew she had shit to do, and I didn’t want to be the one who stood in her way. My stomach sank when the door opened and quickly closed. She was gone, which meant it was time for me to get rolling.
Things had changed dramatically over the past few weeks. I’d gained all the feeling back in my legs, and while I was still struggling to fire on all cylinders, I was making progress. I no longer needed help getting in and out of bed, and I’d kicked the wheelchair and the walker. I was now down to a cane, and that was just for the extra balance.
I hadn’t been cleared to drive, but I was well on my way.
I took my shower, and by the time I was out, my coffee was ready. I’d just started to pour myself a cup when Ghost pulled up. I made a cup to go, and then I grabbed my keys and started outside to meet him. I’d barely made it out to the porch when he and Goose rolled down the window, and I knew the second I saw the smirks on their faces that I was in for it.
“What’s going on here?”
“Nothing,” Ghost answered innocently. “We’re just here to take you to therapy.”
“Yeah, right.” I got in and closed the door. “Save me the bullshit and tell me what’s up.”
Ghost motioned his head over at Goose as he said, “Someone wanted to check out your therapist.”
“Jess?”
“Yeah.” Goose glanced back over his shoulder and said, “Word is she’s fucking hot.”
“My Jess?”
“Yeah, he went on and on about her.”
“I don’t see it.”
“You sure about that?” Goose pushed. “Cause Skid said she was all kinds of fine and I could use a little fine in my life.”
“I can tell you now that you don’t wanna pick up what Jess is putting down, but don’t take my word for it. Come on into my session today and see for yourself.”
