Page 46 of For Her

Mayzie’s voice breaks off when she sees the camera men and sound techs scurrying over to me as I stroll in carrying our little boy, and then turns in our direction. Her face is full of surprise and then falls into a relaxed smile, pleasantly surprised and beaming at us.

A thrill buzzes through my body at the sight of her in her usual dance clothing, including a slouchy t-shirt that does little to hide her belly that’s slightly swollen and housing our second son.

“What are you guys doing here?” she asks sweetly with that smile I love.

“We were bored at home, Mommy,” I explain as I lean down to give her a kiss. Felix reaches for his mom (can’t blame him) and she takes him in her arms, cooing her hellos and kissing his cheeks.

“So, what have we got going on here?” I ask, looking around the studio as the camera men pan out to get good footage of our interactions.

“Well,” she gestures at the speechless young couple with her free arm before pointing to each one, starting with the girl who stands straight and stiff as a board, her face void of almost any emotion. “This is Jessie, and Gale,” Mayzie finishes, pointing to the dumbfounded young guy who would otherwise strike me as the cocky type, “and they’re just a little stuck on the dip-to-lift sequence.”

“Ah,” I muse with my hands on my hips, because I know exactly what she’s referring to as we’ve practiced in her home studio enough times. “Should we show ‘em how it’s done?” I raise a playful eyebrow at her.

Mayzie smiles, trying not to giggle as she makes a show of looking at the ceiling, pretending to think about it.

“Yeah, why not?”

That’s my girl.
