I swallowed as she leaned over, pressing her face into my jacket. I looked at the doctor. "She was ambushed and had no choice."

The nurse looked sympathetic before turning away. The doctor and nurse stepped out while Gina cried, saying a soft prayer in the air.

I pulled her head up, cupping her face. I wiped her eyes, looking deep into her eyes. "Gina, I want to be around. I want to be a dad, and I want to do all of it with you. I know that our road is rocky, but I'm on it with you. And no matter how much you push me away, I will always be there for you."

I wiped a few of her tears away, pressing my forehead against hers. She took a shaky breath in before she spoke up. "I want that. I want you." She pulled her hand up and wrapped her fingers around my jacket. She sniffled. "I know I'm difficult, and I'm sorry. I just…this is an entirely different world than I'm used to."

I knew that. I had been right where she was years ago when I left.

I held her close, kissing the top of her head. I knew we still had things to figure out, but at least we were together. The baby was fine. That was what mattered the most.

"I love you more than anything in the world. And we can take this at whatever pace you want."

She looked stunned, and I realized I'd never said the words before. I kissed her, making sure to hold her there, allowing my body to realize they were both safe.

"I love you too," she whispered.

I didn't know how long I held her against me or how long it was before the doctor came back with a release form. I took it in and accepted it. I knew we still had a lot to figure out, but at least we were going to do it together.

Chapter 27 - Gina

I changed into a simple white dress. I couldn't help but smile, seeing the small bump that was growing by the day. The baby was safe and healthy, and that was what mattered the most to me.

I turned, looking around the master bedroom that we had officially moved into. Lucas had been continuing to stay with me, his stuff taking up half of the room. The room was a beautiful light blue with plants filling it. The cream curtains were open, the room sparkling under the afternoon sun.

It was warm but comfortable. I wiggled my toes in the cream rug by my full-length mirror and sighed. I was nervous. Chris was coming with the deed, and while things between Lucas and I were really good, it didn't change how I felt about him. He was still a prick. Chris likely was going to have more than a few words to share about what he thought.

But after today, I would never have to speak to him again. I was free once that deed was in my hands.

I walked over to the window nearest to me and opened it. I looked down, noticing Lucas standing in the garden with Miles and Cayden. They were talking as they worked on fixing the destroyed fence.

I was still pissed about it. And Lucas offered to have him and the guys redo it instead of me paying for it again. I was lucky that it wasn't the entire fence that had been ruined in the fight.

"Why is it crooked?" Miles asked as he stepped back, staring at the fence.

"It's not crooked," Lucas snapped at him. "It's fine."

"No, Miles is right. It's not straight." Cayden said, stepping back as well to stare at the fence. "I think we put it up wrong."

"Maybe because you two are standing there while I do all the work," Lucas grumbled back at them. He took a step back, staring at the fence, and cursed. "Fuck! It's crooked."

A smirk pulled on my lip. As much as Lucas argued with the guys, I could tell it was out of love. He cared about the guys. And the more time I spent with them, I could see how much Lucas had really changed over the years.

I turned and headed out of the room, pausing at the room across from ours. It was the nursery we had been working on. There were only a couple of rooms left up here that needed work: the bathroom down the hallway and one of the spare bedrooms we were converting into an office for me.

I walked over, opened the door, and stepped inside the room. The space, much like our room, was warm and full of light. In the corner of the bedroom, we had a wicker crib with a large rug of forest animals on it.

The room was forest-themed, with a large brown rocking chair in the corner. A forest was painted on the back wall, and a shelf took up another corner, already plump with children's books. A couple of plants were hanging on the rod with the curtains, and some stuffed animals were on floating shelves.

The dresser and the closet were filled with clothes and everything we would need when the baby arrived.

I walked over, taking in the space, feeling a flutter in my stomach. I placed my hands on my stomach and smiled. I was eager for the baby's arrival. We still had several more months to go and needed to finish the house. But once it was done, we were set.

I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and turned just as Lucas stepped into the doorway. He raised an eyebrow at me and then smirked. "You spend a lot of time here for no baby."

I rolled my eyes. "I'm just eager. And this calms me."

He walked over, smiling at me as he reached up, cupping my face. "Chris will not be here long. I don't like him, so he won't stick around."
