This was my chance to start over and finally have happiness. I had to get this house.
I wiped at the few tears that broke free, seeing myself living here. Deep in my bones, I felt this was where I was meant to be.
I turned to the fridge and opened it. The light remained off, and I sighed. So the electricity wasn't set up. If I got the house, I would likely need to have things rewired.
I turned to the stove, knowing it was a gas stove. I flicked it on, shocked as a spark started and the stove burst to life.
"Huh…" I stared at the flame, mesmerized by it. "So, gas is still here. Weird."
I turned it off, but it still remained. I scowled, trying once more to turn the nob, but it wouldn't move.
"Shit," I said, turning to the faucet. I flicked the water on and found the water wasn't on either.
"Shit, shit, shit."
I turned to look for something to blow it out when the sound of fire cracking caught my attention. I turned, and the firecaught onto the curtain hanging above the window and crawled up the curtain.
"Oh fuck," I squealed, frantically trying to wave my hands over the fire, but it only seemed to grow.
"Son of a bitch," I said as the room heated. I stepped back, watching the fire grow and grabbing at the cabinets.
Just then, to the right of me, the door opened, and Lucas stood there. His eyes widened as he took in the kitchen, and then his eyes snapped to me. I was too panicked and frazzled to question why he was there.
He grabbed my arm, yanking me back.
"Stop the fire!" I yelled, suddenly unable to leave. "I can't leave! We have to stop it."
"Gina, move," he growled at me, his voice sharp.
I shook my head and felt his arms grab me as he threw me over his shoulder. I screamed, trying to break myself free.
"Stop it, Lucas!" I cried, feeling tears break free. "We have to stop the fire! I can't lose this place!"
"There is no water here," he snapped, taking me through the dining room and to the front entrance. "There hasn't been water to this house in ten years. Would you like me to leave you inside to burn with the house?"
I shook my head. This house couldn't burn down because I was an idiot and turned the stove on, which shouldn't have even worked!
"Lucas, put me down! I have to save the house!" If this house burned, I would be stuck with nothing. I tried once more to get free.
"Stop," Lucas ordered, and for the first time ever, I did. I let him carry me through the house, tears burning my eyes.
I couldn't lose the house. I'd suffered through so much, and I couldn't have it slip through my fingers because of something so simple.
Chapter 4 - Lucas
I adjusted her over my shoulder as I took her through the front doors and outside. I kept walking, making sure we were a few feet away from the house before putting her down. I instantly grabbed my phone, knowing I needed to call Ayden. We only had a few minutes before the fire would engulf the entire kitchen and a few more minutes before it would start at the rest of the house.
I could feel her step away, and I quickly grabbed her wrist, stopping her as she turned to the house. I knew exactly where her plan was; while I sensed the house was obviously important to her, I wasn't letting her go.
"Don't even think about it," I snapped. "I did not just drag your ass out here for you to run back inside."
"Every second we are out here, it's only going to grow bigger," she yelled at me. Her bright blue eyes were filled with tears and twisted me up. I couldn't stand it when a woman cried, and I wasn't good at handling them.
I ground my teeth together. "Okay, what were you exactly planning to do?" I asked. "Do tell me, how were you going to stop that fire because it looked like you didn't have a damn clue when I got in there. You were just waving your hands at it, feeding it more air."
She clearly was upset, but she didn't have an answer. She sighed as I looked at my phone. "Who are you calling?"
"My boss," I said.
