Chapter 23 - Ashley
I swallowed as Logan pulled up to a large cabin-looking house. I scanned the surrounding area, keeping my eyes peeled for any quick way to get free. I can't shift because I’m pregnant, so I’ll needed to think of a different way to get back.
Logan went around the car, opening my door, but he stood in the way, not allowing me to move far. He leaned down into my space, placing his hands on my knees, which made my entire body tense. "Let's go inside, shall we?"
I gave him a single nod, allowing him to practically yank me out of the car. We walked, and my eyes scanned.
There were no extra cars, so I couldn't make a fast getaway. I would have to somehow get the keys off him if I wanted to use his car.
He opened the door and went inside the house. There were deer heads hanging on the walls and a large fireplace. There was also a huge kitchen, which had several more deer heads, including a moose head, as well.
"My best catches," Logan said, shutting the door and locking it.
I felt panic but kept my hands still at my side. I didn't need him to know I was scared. "Interesting," I said softly, looking at the windows. I wondered if they were locked. They looked like they opened, so I should be good.
"There is a bathroom down that hallway with the laundry, and the rest of the house is on the second floor."
He placed his hand on my back, and I felt my stomach flip. I walked forward with him, hoping he wouldn't feel my discomfort.
We headed up the stairs towards a hallway that had six more doors.
"The four bedrooms and the second bathroom," he said.
I wasn't listening. My eyes were scanning for another window or even a sharp object. I just needed a minute of him dropping his guard, and I could maybe get myself free.
His hand swiped out, grabbing my face painfully. He stepped into my space, pinning me against the wall. I inhaled sharply, staring at him.
"I would be very careful about what is going on in that little head of yours," he said, his brown eyes narrowed on me. His fingers tightened, his nails digging into my skin.
"I am," I squeaked out.
"I beg to differ. Don't think I don't know what's going on up there. I've been married before. I know it takes a while to break someone's spirit."
I swallowed, feeling my hands starting to shake now.
"If you try anything, I will punish you. I will give you this warning once, and that is all you will get. I don't stand for screw-ups, and I won't stand for mistakes. I have many ways of getting what I want. So be a good girl, or else."
I gave him a single nod, wanting his hands off me.
But he only pressed his body against mine, and my entire body was pinned hard against the wall now. "And if you think of running back to your parents, know they agreed with this. They won't protect you. They will drag you back here, and when I get my hands on you, you will wish you had listened."
I felt tears bloom.
He let go, taking a step back. He fixed his face, acting like he never threatened me. "Let me show you the rooms."
He opened the first door, and I took a deep breath, trying to power through.
The first room was simple. It had a large bed with a dresser pressed to the side. There was a small rocking chair in the corner and a large window, which I could tell was bolted shut. My guess was this was my room.
"I have clothes in the closet, but we can buy you others if they don't fit."
My stomach flipped at the thought they were likely his last wife's clothes.
He took me to the next bedroom, which made my eyes pop. It was a nursery. The walls were painted light blue, and the crib was under the window with a little spaceship mobile.
A larger rocking chair was in the corner next to a changing table. While the room was beautiful, it felt eerie and sent a shiver down my spine.
He looked at me, waiting to see what I would say. I didn't know what to say. It was clear all the rumors about him were true. He wanted a son, but he still didn't have one.
