"Just the feeling," he said. "Thought we never had sex in this place's bathroom."
"Owen." I felt my jaw drop. "Someone is going to hear you."
"I was kidding," he said, wigging his eyebrows. "Unless we want to make it true."
I kicked him under the table, and he chuckled, pulling his eyes towards the menu.
I swallowed, feeling my heart flutter. God, I'd missed this. I missed us.
Staring at him now made me wonder if maybe we could move past everything. Perhaps this was our second chance at something.
Chapter 12 - Owen
I finished off the coffee with whipped cream, making sure the little note next to it sat up. I scowled, quickly checking my time. Miles was supposed to be here by now.
I looked down the hallway, making sure Ashley wasn't awake yet. I didn't want her to know I was leaving. I knew she was going to have a bunch of questions and I couldn't answer any of them right now. That and I knew she would want to go, and I couldn’t stomach the meeting going wrong and having something happen to her. I knew it was better to leave her here under Mile’s watch. She was likely going to be pissed, but I could stomach that.
I was going to a meeting with Ayden to talk with Logan. Logan was becoming an even bigger problem, and Ayden was tired of waiting for the waters to calm. So, he was putting a stop to it.
I heard the sound of tires and turned back, finding Miles was just pulling up. The rain was starting to lighten up, which would at least give me a calmer drive back to town at least.
I quickly grabbed my jacket and pulled it on. I knew that Ashley was still in bed, my bed, to be exact. After our time out last night, she fell asleep on the couch. I was going to put her in bed, but she had a death grip on my shirt, so I was forced to just bring her into bed with me.
I woke up, and she finally had let go, so I slipped out of bed without waking her. I showered and dressed quickly, knowing I needed to leave early to get into town and have enough time for the meeting.
Miles opened the door and rubbed his boots into the rug. "God, it was raining heavily the entire drive out here."
I looked at the rain and then back at him. "Ashley is still asleep. I should be home a little before dinner."
Miles crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow at me. "That's all the information I'm getting. You beg me to come all the way down here to watch her, and you won't even tell me what the hell is going on?"
"Ayden didn't tell you?" I asked, grabbing the keys to the truck.
"He did, but I was hoping for a little more from you."
I sighed, looking at the time. I didn't have time to catch him up on everything. "It's a long store which I don't have time to tell. Just make sure she stays here and keep a close eye on her."
Miles slid his shoes off and sighed. "I know how to watch someone."
"Really? Because I recall Ayden chewing your ass when you lost his daughter."
"She ran off," Miles argued. "And he didn't tell me that she was shifting yet! If I had known that, I would have been more prepared."
I snorted, grabbing the door. "Okay, well, I'm warning you: Ashley can shift, so keep an eye on her."
Miles glared, clearly not impressed. "You're an ass."
"And your beta, so if you lose her, trust me, I'll wring your neck."
Miles's eyebrows went up. "Wow…. you're nervous, aren't you? I don't think I've ever known you issue a threat."
I scowled. I was nervous. I was extremely nervous, and I slept like shit. The thought of Logan getting his hands on Ashley was putting me on edge.
I nodded. "Just…keep her here."
Miles nodded as I shut the door and slipped outside. I got into the truck and took a deep breath before turning it on and heading out.
The drive was long, but I was grateful for it. I needed to collect myself before the meeting. I didn't need to let Logan know he was under my skin. It would only make him feel like he was in the right.
