“Well, let’s say you love blue but hate green. I won’t look at an idea with those colors.”

“Anything but orange.”

She smiled. “So, pink is a good color for you?”

“You’re being a smartass, Little Sub.”

She snorted and walked out of the room. She laughed when she heard him bark, “No pink.”

Chapter Six

Zeke’s head jerked toward his office door when he heard a male voice yelling. He jumped up and walked out to see an older man leaning over Kayla’s desk. His face was red with anger.

Zeke moved toward the man. “Can I help you?”

Kayla and the man turned to him.

“No,” the man said. “Only Kayla can help me.”

“I don’t like the way you’re yelling, sir. Especially at my dispatcher.”

“Listen, Mister, I don’t know who you are, but you got no business…”

“Actually, I do.”

Kayla stood and held a hand out to the older man. “Georgie, don’t yell at our new sheriff. You know we’ll help you. Don’t we always?”

“Kayla,” Zeke warned. She took a few steps closer to the angry man.

She turned to him and held up a hand. “He’s okay, Sheriff. He just gets scared…”

“I need her to help me get Maude down.”

“Down from what?” Zeke asked.

“The tree.”

“Is Maude your cat?”

“No, she’s my wife.”

“Your wife?” Zeke barked.

“Yeah.”

“How about I call a deputy to help? Would that be okay?” Kayla asked.

Georgie nodded. “I would appreciate it, Kayla.”

“Go on home, and they’ll be there as soon as possible.”

The older man waved and walked out.

Zeke waited until she finished the call, then grabbed herhand and pulled her into his office.

“What are you doing?” She laughed as she ran to keep up with his long-legged stride.

He stopped abruptly in the doorway to his office and looked down at her. “I think you’re as attracted to me as I am to you. I want to put my hands on you, but I’ll understand if you don’t want me to touch you here or if you want to wait.”
