Looking up, for a minute, I let myself remain limp. I let myself be pulled along to wherever they were going to take me behind a currently unbothered Benjamin who was going to hold me captive for the rest of my life.
He was going to bite me. Bond me. Rut me through my heat.
I shook from how my body began its steady burn, yet held off just enough for me to remain mostly coherent. Maybe it was my omega’s way of apologizing, she couldn’t hold it off forever.
Or maybe, I was just shaking from the silent tears pooling at the corners of my eyes.
I stared up at the dim stars I could see through the heavy fabric of the night sky.
I’m sorry Peter, I thought to myself--
Right as someone collided with me and the unprepared guards.
Maple sugar surrounded my senses. I was free, being hauled away into familiar arms.
“Lucas?”
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Lucas was here and wearing a suit like he’d been inside all along.
He never left my side.
What was he doing?
The tears finally leaked down my cheeks at the sight of him. He couldn’t be here.
“What are you doing?”
“I couldn’t leave without you,” he said. “I refused. We all did, but I promised that I wouldn’t let him take you out from here because it would be too late. I could scent you and you needed me and I just...”
“Lucas,” I gasped, holding onto him as if for dear life. I didn’t want to let him go. My omega screamed, I couldn’t let him go. “What are you doing here?”
“I came for you,” he said, eyes glimmering with determination.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
His hands held onto mine, pulling me along. “I’m not letting you go. I’m choosing you, Ella. I know it. You’re my happy and I’m not letting go.”
There was a shot. There was red, the same shade as my dress.
I fell to the ground.
Chapter
Twenty-Six
ELLA
Iheard someone screaming before I realized the blood-curdling shout was escaping from my lips and was unable to stop. This couldn’t be happening. This couldn’t be happening.
I fell to the ground as I cradled Lucas over my legs, in my arms, however, I could to keep him up and with me.
“No no no,” I said over and over again. Tears were no longer hiding, flowing down my cheeks as my body curled over itself from the heat and a whole new kind of pain. “NO.”
I wanted Lucas to say something. Anything.
But he just stared at me. His cool aquamarine eyes stare at nothing. The sparkle in them when he laughed and held me… It wasn’t there.
Where did it go?
