I yanked at my stupid dress until my neckline was low enough that I could see everything. I didn’t know how this worked in real life, so I wanted to make sure I gave him enough space to work with.

“Ella. Stop.” He tried to cover my hands with his. “What are you doing?”

“You’re going to bite me now. Right now.”

“No,” Demetri said, with more shock clear in his voice now. But why was he so shocked? He was here. He was holding me to him before pulling me back to look at my face. “No, Ella.”

“Yes. Is that what it is? It is, isn’t it? Are you nervous because they took me away once and you can’t risk it again? You can. Just like Lidya and her pack. You just have to bite me and I’ll tell them it was my idea. I seduced you. Or I coerced you or something.”

“Ella.”

“You can’t let Davinsons take me,” I insisted.

Both of us stopped moving as I said the words. Only, I started to realize now. There was no emotion on Demetri’s face when he looked at me. His arms hung limp on either side of him.

“They will,” I said as if the words would somehow have a better response to my liking. “There are promises in place and they already came to see me. I told you all this. I told our Pack this.”

His eyes shuttered.

“Please,” I begged. “There is my heart and they are here and we all know this whole thing is just a ruse unless… You can’t let this happen.”

He looked over my shoulder, towards the hall we just came from where the rest of the courting event was still going on.

I looked too.

No one was there.

“This is our chance,” I repeated my plea. “You’re here! Take me home. Take me back to Cal and Liam and Marko and our pack.”

This was crazy. Insane really. It would get us into a heap of trouble, but it wouldn’t be the first time that this kind of thing happened. Scent matches and corner rendezvous that turned into something a little too much–it’s why omegas had handlers here. We could make it believable.

It was our only option right now. He had to see that.

He saw it, didn’t he?

“Please.” I was not above begging Demetri right now. I wouldn’t stop. I didn’t care that he followed the rules. I didn’t care what would happen. I was not going to let them take me back there. Not now. “Please just bite me right now. We’re alone. Please claim me as your omega.”

His eyes turned hard as he held me back from him. Only a flash of pain may have crossed his face, or maybe I was imagining that.

Maybe I just wanted to see it.

But now, nothing was there.

“No,omega.”

Omega.

I swallowed, feeling a new sort of heat overcoming me. It burned like someone had lit my insides on fire. It was perhaps one of the worst pains I ever felt that left me gasping for a breath of air.

Rejection.

“B-but… I thought…” I couldn’t form my words but it was clear what I was trying to say.

I thought I was your omega. I thought I was Pack Prestford. I thought you promised.

“Then why are you even here? Really?”

Demetri's eyes flickered with a mix of emotions as he took a step back, his jaw clenched. The tension crackled between us, heavy with unspoken truths and shattered expectations. His voice was cold when he spoke, each word cutting through me like a knife.
