I was always going to be Elena… Elena Davinson. Just like I was sold off.

Promised to be from the day me and my brother thought we had it all figured out.

How gullible we were.

“They won’t. I won’t let them,” Lidya said with determination.

“You won’t be able to stop them,” I said.

At that, Lidya didn’t say anything. “Yes. Yes, I can.”

“Lidya.” She needed to get real. I was starting to. Finally.

“If I have to beg Adam to bite you, I will.”

The heat flare was subsiding, but I decided that I certainly was not hearing her right still. “What?”

“A pack can have more than one omega,” she said, though she looked a little sick while saying it.

“No, Lidya.”

“No. I’m going to keep you safe, Ella. I promised, didn’t I?”

Not like that. I shook my head. “I’ll figure this out.”

“Uh huh.”

“I will,” I said again. I wouldn’t let this hurt anyone else.

As I lay in the darkness of our room, the weight of Lidya's promise hung heavy in the air. Despite my initial reluctance, a flicker of hope sparked within me at the thought of someone willing to go to such lengths to protect me. But deep down, I knew the challenges ahead were not so easily overcome.

With a heavy heart, I realized the magnitude of the decisions that lay before me. The impending fate dictated by tradition and hierarchy loomed over me like a dark cloud, threatening to engulf any semblance of choice or autonomy I had left.

As Lidya held me close, a sense of determination began to blossom within me. I couldn't change the past or the circumstances that led me to this pivotal moment, but I could shape the future. Maybe not both of ours or even any of the other omegas here.

But I owed it to myself and to those who cared for me to stand up and fight against the injustices that plagued us and not let them spread.

I’d made hard decisions before. I could make more. If I had to.

And I did.

ELLA

The courting days were arriving faster than I ever thought before.

If not for the constant reminders in all of the classes that seemed to be wrapped up like the end of the year in a normal school, then the chattering omegas were another sign.

All of them were excited. They were hoping to see what was outside in the world by finding an alpha, and hopefully quickly when courting came.

They murmured about all the things they would do and how they would never become a courting repeater like some of the outcasted omegas who overstayed their welcome at the academy which truly made little sense to me.

Sure, alphas were rare, but omegas were even more so.

How were omegas not being paired? Chosen?
