“Do you know what it is?” I ask.
“No, I don’t,” he responds. “What else happened?”
“Hmm. Bedi seemed sure you’d know what it means.” I bite my lip, debating on telling him about the noise. I decide it’s better not to leave anything out. “There was something else. It was strange, but there was no sound in our duplex until I took this out of her mouth. Then it all came rushing back.”
Kaos curses, running a hand over his chin. “It’s worse than I thought.”
“What is?”
“The Light Weavers can manipulate sound. This was likely the handiwork of their Elites.”
“They have Elites too?”
He nods. Perfect.
“Wait,” Ash says. “How did you find us? Dante was the only one around when she told him our address. How do we know you didn’t have anything to do with this?” She accuses, waving her pepper spray in his face.
Solid accusation. I take a step back, waiting for his answer.
Kaos winces, looking a tiny bit sheepish. “It’s the bond. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, Little Flame. I forget how little you know about who you are.”
“The bond comes with a built-in tracking device, or what?” I ask, patting my body down like there’s going to be a physical tracker on me.
He chuckles. “I’ll show you. Close your eyes and focus on your chest.”
I do as he says.
“Good, do you feel that?”
I nod, feeling energy swirling inside my chest. The longer I focus on it the more it starts to reveal itself. There in the center is a bright ball of energy and there are little threads of silver trailing off in different directions.
“I see a ball of light,” I tell him.
“Now picture where I am and let the threads guide you.”
When I do, there’s a tug in his direction, like an invisible wire attached from his body to mine. After I reopen my eyes, the silver wire is still there, running from my heart to his.
“That’s cool as hell! I’m going to get spoiled with all this fancy Weaver magic.” I chuckle. “Speaking of Weavers, where is Dante?”
“Huh? I thought he was here. He didn’t go inside with you?” Kaos asks, looking around like he’s suddenly seeing the area for the first time.
I smirk. I’ve managed to distract him. I didn’t think that was possible.
“No, I waited twenty minutes, even circled the block three times,” I say with a shrug. “Eventually I decided I couldn’t wait on him any longer. Something was urging me to go inside.”
Kaos growls and the sound sends a zing straight to my lady bits. “That was extremely reckless, Sadie. What the hell were you thinking?”
“I’m not totally defenseless, Kaos. May I remind you that you’ve seen me in action.”
“That may be true, but you don’t know how to defend yourself against our kind! What if there had been an ambush inside waiting to take you? Most of them have magic and you don’t even have your powers yet.”
As much as I hate to admit it, he’s right.
“Fine, but I’m no weakling. You’ll see that one day.”
Dante pops out of the shadows next to us making me jump back, and reach for my switchblade. “For the love of fuck, you guys have got to stop doing that! I’m going to have to put bells on you or else you might actually get stabbed!”
“Feeling stabby, are we, Angel?” He chuckles, nodding his head toward my switchblade. When I roll my eyes, he apologizes. Although, he doesn’t look sorry in the slightest.
