A low growl rumbled behind her from Adam. He’d seen them too. His kind enslaved.
Aoife took a step forward and Prince Ivar in his polished armor rode ahead, atop a unicorn. Another creature being forced to do Ivar’s bidding. Unicorns usually ran free and were seen with fair young maidens.
Not elfin princes.
“I had a feeling you’d be here in Thunder Bay,” Ivar stated coolly. “Where else would a banshee from Canada hide?”
Aoife took a deep steadying breath. “You should leave.”
He glanced over her shoulder and snorted. “I don’t understand the need for this rabble of beings. This is between you and me, harbinger.”
Coraliane hissed and Aoife saw her crouch down, her face distorted, her teeth like knives, sharp and pointy.
“Oh no?” Aoife asked. “You’ve brought an army through a secret portal. What do you expect, a welcome party?”
Prince Ivar snorted, tossing his white blond hair over his shoulder. “Yes? I’ve come to collect my bride. It’s a time of celebration.”
Adam snarled again and took a step forward, as he did, Ivar’s armored soldiers raised their spears in response.
“She’s not yours,” Adam growled.
Prince Ivar barely glanced at him, but motioned for his army to lower their weapons. “You have a little pet. I find them quite useful.”
“You’re not supposed to have a Sasquatch army,” Aoife stated. “Does your father know about this?”
“Why would my father care?” Ivar scoffed.
“Perhaps because you plan to overthrow him?” Aoife retorted.
Ivar’s eyes widened for a moment. His mouth pressed together in a thin line. “That’s treason for you to utter those words.”
“I think it’s more treacherous for a son to murder his father and take over the realms,” Aoife shouted, her voice gaining that metallic pitch as she felt her powers welling up inside her.
“And where did you hear this foolishness?” Ivar asked.
“Me,” Cillian said, appearing suddenly. “I told them.”
Ivar’s face paled. “You…what?”
“Yeah, the princes of darkness found out about your little plan with my mother,” Aoife chided. “The thing is, I’m head of the Tuatha Order now. There’s no marriage agreement. Not anymore. And there's no point in trying to find my mother.”
“She’s kind of in a bit of hot water right now,” Cillian teased, grinning.
Ivar took a step back.
She could tell that he was rethinking everything. Without the Order and with a bunch of the realm inhabitants knowing what he was up to. She had no doubt he had deduced that he was well and truly fucked.
“And what do you plan to do with this information?” Prince Ivar asked calmly.
“No more restrictions on beings. Let us mingle freely with the mortal realm,” Coraliane shouted. “We’re tired of the rules. Let us be free. All of us.”
There was a large ruckus of others agreeing.
“I can’t do that. Only my father can,” Ivar hissed.
“I bet you can twist his arm,” Aoife stated.
His eyes narrowed. “What if I just take you now? My men can take all of you. Even your yeti pet.”
