“You don’t know how hard it’s been,” Mia said. “I didn’t want a child. I only want him.”

“Wanted as in past tense,” Sheridan said.

“He was good to me until I got pregnant,” Mia said. “If it hadn’t been for the brat.”

“Stop it,” Sheridan said. “He got you pregnant on purpose. He wanted a son. He sold you when he found out it was a girl. Is that the kind of man you want to be with?”

“He was disappointed,” Mia said making excuses. “I’m sure he regretted it.”

“No, he didn’t,” Sheridan said. “You need to be realistic.”

“I miss him,” Mia said tears gathering again.

“Him or the sex,” Sheridan asked.

“You don’t understand,” Mia said. She cut the connection.

“Why are you searching for your sister’s ex-husband,” Cade demanded.

“I want to make sure he’s nowhere near where they are,” Sheridan said.

“He isn’t,” Cade said.

“How do you know,” Sheridan asked not looking up from her search. She paused in her searching as her question was met with silence. “Cade?”

“He’s under investigation,” Cade said. “I can’t tell you more than that. He isn’t near them. Tappn and Calli have made sure.”

“What do you mean,” Sheridan said.

“Do you think I would let him get away with what he did to you and your sister,” Cade growled. “Do you think Tappn would?”

“Why is your brother-in-law’s brother involved in this,” Sheridan said.

“Because he has an interest,” Cade said.

“In who,” Sheridan demanded. “My sister doesn’t need another male right now.”

“She needs a strong hand,” Cade said.

“Excuse you,” Sheridan said anger starting to bubble in her gut.

“Calli offered her a job,” Cade said. “Did you know? Did she tell you she could make her own money?”

“Yes,” Sheridan said. “Why are you angry?”

“Because she relies on you too much,” Cade said. “She talks horribly to you and you take it from her.”

“She’s my sister,” Sheridan said.

“I know. You sacrificed everything for her. You…” he walked away from her.

“Cade,” Sheridan said surprised by his reaction.

“I’m going to the lower level,” he growled and walked away.

“Wait,” Sheridan said. She went to him, put her arms around him. “You’re angry because of the way my family treats me.”
