Ulrik growled unhappy the doctor wanted her shirt off.
“All right,” Gwyn said. “Where do you need me?”
“Can’t you do the scan with her shirt on,” Ulrik asked.
“If he could, he wouldn’t have asked me to take it off,” Gwyn said. “You can stand next to me and hold my hand.”
“He can hold the scanner in place,” Doctor Shifleman said. “Here. Lie here.”
Stepping to a nearby drawer, he extracted a small circular device. “This has to be held here,” he pointed to a place on Ulrik’s chest.
Gwyn tugged her shirt off, set it on the chair as she lay on the bed he indicated. Ulrik growled at the doctor. “Captain, you’re in control of her health,” he said.
“How long will it take,” Gwyn asked.
“It depends on how accurate the placement of the device is,” Doctor Shifleman said not looking at Gwyn but at Ulrik.
Ulrik turned, stood to block the doctor’s view of his Gwyn. Gently, he set the device between her lovely breasts. “Is this correct,” he asked.
“Yes,” Doctor Shifleman said watching his comp rather than his patient.
“It’s cold,” Gwyn said. She pulled Ulrik down to kiss him. “It’s all right.”
“I’ve got what I need,” Doctor Shifleman said. Ulrik grabbed Gwyn’s shirt and handed it to her. Sitting up, she pulled it on over her head.
“What did you find,” Ulrik demanded not moving until Gwyn’s shirt covered her again.
“I’ve got some questions for you,” Doctor Shifleman said.
“There’s something wrong,” Gwyn said.
“Not wrong,” Doctor Shifleman said. “A DNA test will help me determine if the anomalies I’m seeing are genetic or if there’s a different issue.” Ulrik sat next to Gwyn and tightly gripped her hand.
“It’s all right,” Gwyn said rubbing his leg and leaning on him. “DNA testing is fine.”
“Can you tell me something about your parents,” Doctor Shifleman asked.
“What do you want to know,” she asked.
“You’re listed as human, fully human,” he said.
“I’m not,” Gwyn said. “My mother was human, but my father wasn’t fully human.”
“Do you know what he was,” Doctor Shifleman asked. This could be a touchy topic.
“It should be in my records. If not mine, my mother’s,” Gwyn said.
“Why would it be in your mother’s records,” Ulrik asked.
“She was contracted by my father,” Gwyn said.
“As a companion,” Doctor Shifleman asked.
“Yes,” Gwyn said her jaw tightening. “I don’t know who because it’s been secured but a man asked for her as a companion. She was under contract to him for two years. At the end of the two-year contract, he asked her to do a longer contract which included having a child. They agreed and here I am. It’s my understanding, he broke the contract after my birth.”
“Bastard,” Ulrik grumbled.
“Yes, quite,” Doctor Shifleman said. “If you hold out your hand, I’ll take a sample and you can be on your way.”
