But something inside of me disagreed. What would have been the point of mentioning it if it was useless information? It was a backstory, it all was part of a backstory that lead to bigger and greater things, and even if it took a whole damn year, I vowed to myself to figure it out.
“I think we should search the place for clues.” Ellis tossed the last piece of paper from the envelope at Sterling. The paper bounced off his arm, not even phasing him.
“You think he left clues?” Sterling asked, and though I stood by the fact that I knew none of us were stupid, I couldn’t say with confidence that we were all the fastest thinkers. Sterling. I was referring to that bastard. It’s like words leave his mouth before his brain can catch up, and it only fuels Ellis further.
“Yeah, genius. I thought he left a trail of breadcrumbs straight to them.”
Sterling opened his mouth, ready to start an argument which would no doubt take up time we didn’t have, and patience I lost centuries ago. I cut in, stopping him before words could come out, “He was referring to clues about his life, not physical hidden clues. James wouldn’t have made a whole elaborate game of hide and seek.”
“Well, he planned enough to get this taken care of.” He pointed to the stack of papers and photos that now littered the table in front of us.
“Having your will and last requests in order differs vastly from creating a whole elaborate scavenger hunt.” Ellis picked up the papers and shoved them back into the envelope. “Besides, there hasn’t been a day that has gone by since he sank his fangs into my neck that I ever questioned him. If James thought he had given us all the information, then he did. We just aren’t using it properly. We have a few days to stay in this house. That tells me he knew we would snoop about, that we would look for an answer.”
“That tells me that timing with the estate lined up in our favor,” Sterling countered.
I groaned. Must it always be something between them? “We’ve got a few days, let’s use it. Whatever else happens once we are kicked out, well, we will figure it out from there. Agreed?”
I looked between both men, waiting for either of them to make a smart ass remark. Instead, they let a few moments pass before they both nodded. “Agreed.”
