Sadly, none of them are. They needed a woman like me.

I crooked my finger and beckoned him to follow me behind one of the tall bushes closer to the mansion.

Like the lost little puppy he was, he did as I commanded.

Once we were deep enough and my ears didn’t pick up the sounds of any familiars nearby, I slammed him against the wall of the building and licked up the column of his neck, right along his Adam's apple.

“Jordan, I want you so badly, but we can’t. William is out there and he’s coming to find you.”

He groaned and grabbed my ass in two handfuls, molding it in his palm. I faked a whimper and ground against him for good measure.

“I thought about what you said.”

His dick hardened between us, poking me, begging for entrance despite the fabrics that restrained it.

“Yeah? What was that? You sure we can’t have a quickie right here? Just keep your moans down when I stick my dick in you.”

I panted against him, acting like I was engrossed in everything his hands were doing to me.

“The only way we can be together would be for you to get rid of your brother. He would never let us, you know this. He would kill you if he found out. I couldn’t live with myself if he did. I need you.”

“Fuck. I know. I know!” He grabbed my hand and shoved it between us, forcing me to stroke him over his pants. He cradled my face and kissed me deeply. “I have a plan. It’s going to happen.”

Giving him doe eyes, I bit my bottom lip with a look of concern. “He wants me to come with him to the next meeting. We can’t be next to each other.”

“Fuck!”

And like that, the seed of conspiracy was planted.

We quickly kissed once more before I turned and left him with the problem he had between his legs. After all, a girl couldn’t make it that easy for them to get what they wanted.

With a soft smile, I demurely walked back into the mansion’s large double doors and up the staircase toward my marital chambers.

A swish of air beside me made me turn. I stared at the empty room and scanned my surroundings. Holding my breath, I strained to hear anything around me. Only the sound of night insects and light scuffling of footsteps in far hallways came to me. A few of the walking cadences I recognized as some of our night servants.

The moon’s glow cast shadows along some of the corners of the room. I was paranoid but didn’t let it show.

I continued up the steps and turned right. Each step was careful and quiet. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, but I tried to ignore it. I knew there was someone here. The only other person who was able to sneak up on me was Ian because his infiltrator abilities allowed him to disappear into the shadows.

This didn’t feel like Ian. He was too cocky to not make his presence known. He wasn’t a stranger to playing mind games though.

When I make it to my bedroom door, I push it open and stare into my room for a few moments before entering. The rest area that housed my vanity was quiet. I couldn’t hear any noises coming from the sleeping area to the left of it either. Stepping in, I pushed the door open further only to have it hit something with a thud.

Frowning, I looked behind the door and found something that piqued my interest. I bent down and grabbed the bloodied bag by the drawstring, lifting it in front of my face.

Carefully opening it and turning it over into my palm, a dead bird with its eyes gouged out and beak torn off falls into my hand. The rigor mortis made it look like it was halfway in flight.

My heart sped up and my pussy clenched. Death and destruction did things to me not many understood.

Who left this little gift, I wondered.

I walked over to my window and placed it delicately on the sil. So close to freedom, yet so far. Never would this little birdie fly again, its soul forever lost. If only the creatures were affected by the virus like we were, I’d have an army of them at my disposal to do my bidding like a dark princess in forgotten stories.

But things change. Princesses were nothing but pawns. Queens controlled wars and land.

I would be a queen.
