“In light of our truce, there’s something you should know. Someone close to a member of your family is the one behind your recent attack, they won’t stop until they get what they want.” He says before strolling out of the restaurant and leaving us all to wonder the same thing.

What the fuck was that?

And who the fuck was he referring to?

Someone close to a member of your family.

None of us are really that fucking close to anyone. I’m close with Alec, but he’s out of the question. Dad keeps to himself andthe highercapos,Marco barely tolerates our presence, never mind anyone else’s. Izzy doesn’t know anyone in the city. The only one left is Enzo, but he’s as reclusive as you come unless you count the girl he’s stalking, but she doesn’t even know he exists so she’s out of the question.

So,who the fuckcould it be?

We leave the restaurant in silence and pile back into the car, I’m in the passenger seat while Dad drives and Marco is in the back.

“Any ideas?” Dad asks once all of the doors are closed, and I shake my head.

“What about someone close to Izzy?” Marco asks from the backseat, and I shake my head again.

“She doesn’t know anyone in the city, the only people she has regular contact with is me andfucking Enzo.Besides, she could rival you for her inability to tolerate other people.”

“Well, we need to fucking figure out who tried to kill my son and daughter-in-law. And when we do? I’ll display their fucking head in Times Square as a warning of what happens if someidiotatries to harm my children.”

Chapter Thirty-Six

Izzy

“Do you really have to go out? Can’t you just ask Enzo to pick it up for you? I’m sure he’ll do it happily,” Luca sighs into the phone and I roll my eyes.

It’s been just over three weeks since we got back from our honeymoon, and I haven’t left the apartment once. I got so fucking bored, I ended up reading some of the books Enzo dropped off while we were away. What he didn’t realize was one of the books was part of a duet and now Ineedto read the second one.

I called Luca and asked him to send Tomasso over so I could head out to the bookstore, but the asshole would rather keep me under lock and fucking key.

“I’ve been cooped up for three fucking weeks, I’m going out, so either send Tomasso or I’m going alone.”

“Fuck, fine. But if you sense even the smallest hint of danger you fucking call me, okay? Or maybe I should skip my meeting and come with you? I could talk to Dad and see if—”

“For fuck’s sake, Luca!” I yell into the phone. “I’ll be fine! You’re not skipping anything, you’re going to go to that meeting and do whatever it is that you have to do while I go to the bookstore to buya book like a fucking normal person, normal people don’t need their husbands trailing after them all of the time.”

“I’m sorry,” he sighs, and I feel bad for yelling at him. “I just want you to be safe baby, I can’t stand the thought of something happening to you.”

I swallow the knot in my throat and promise him that I’ll be fine before hanging up and heading to the elevator.

Luca

I love you, be safe.

I love you too x

I persuaded Tomasso to walk to the bookstore rather than drive. It’s only a few blocks away and I’ve really been slacking on my training since moving here. I need to get back to my routine.

He grumbled something under his breath but didn’t argue with my reasoning that it would be just as easy to walk than it would to drive.

We walk into the store and come face to face with Robyn who gives me a big smile.

“Hey, Robyn, right?” I ask as though I don’t know so much more about her—or her entire life—and she nods.

“That’s right and you’re… Isla? Izzy?”

“Izzy.”
