He slaps my ass, making me yelp. “Go shower. I’ll get Havoc to hang around so I can grab one later while you’re filming.”
“Can I ask you something?” I say as he climbs off the bed and grabs his clothes.
“You can ask me anything. I might not always be able to answer, but I won’t lie to you.”
“How do you feel about Havoc being your president, especially with you being vice president? I know how close you and Blade are. I guess I just wanted you to know that you can be honest with me always, and I’ll keep your secrets safe.”
He leans down and kisses me hard before pulling back and putting his jeans on. “If you had asked me six weeks ago, I would’ve given you a different answer, but…” He pulls his T-shirt over his head before continuing. “After the accident, knowing how he treated you… That’s exactly the kind of man I want as my president and as my friend. Don’t get me wrong, I love Blade like a blood brother, but he’s old-school and pigheaded when he wants to be. He’s been president for so long that he focuses on the big picture and misses the little details. If you weren’t so damn stubborn, he would have come between us. That’s a tough pill to swallow.”
“Knowing your hero’s human?”
He chuckles. “Yeah, maybe.”
“I think you’re forgetting just how smart and sneaky the man is.” I sit up and wrap the sheet around myself so he doesn’t get hypnotized by my boobs; they tend to distract him.
“What do you mean?”
“The night I brought you home drunk, he didn’t have an issue with me. He seemed grateful I brought you back; he even asked if I needed a place to stay for the night or a ride home. He was concerned about why you were drinking in the first place. I think he worried your loyalty to him would make it hard for you to fully accept Havoc, so…” I let my voice trail off as he pauses and fills in the blanks.
“So he drove a wedge between us by pretending not to accept you. Fuck me, I should’ve realized. I knew he was acting out of character, but I didn’t put it together.”
“You’ve had a lot going on, to be fair. And none of this would have worked if Havoc turned out to be a tool. You would never have stopped thinking of Blade as your president, at least in your head. But Havoc is actually a good guy underneath his smolder.”
“His smolder?” He laughs, slipping on his cut.
“You know, like Flynn Rider?” I wave the comment off. “It doesn’t matter. Anyway, I just wanted to make sure how you felt about him because I think with a little time, you guys will make a good team.”
He sits on the side of the bed to lace up his boots. “I think you’re right.”
“Now, if you remember that, we’ll never fight again,” I tease, leaning over to kiss his neck.
He shivers before turning and kissing me back. “Shit, I’ve gotta go before I end up fucking you stupid.”
I twirl my hair and grin. “What, like it’s hard?”
“Legally Blonde?”
My jaw drops in surprise.
“Sunshine had a chick flick marathon a few years back. She said something about the testosterone frying her brain, so she bought a projector and turned one of the fields out behind the clinic into an outdoor movie theater. All the club girls went, andsome of her friends from other clubs. They stuffed their faces and watched chick flicks until their eyes bled. We ended up crashing the party, and honestly, some of them weren’t too bad,” he admits as he stands up.
“Plus, Reese Witherspoon is hot,” I say. “I feel like I’ve hit the boyfriend jackpot here. Likes chick flicks, fucks like it’s an Olympic event, and treats me like I’m his whole world.”
“Because you are.” He leans down and kisses my forehead before pulling back.
Something clicks inside me, and it must show on my face because he smirks.
“You finally get it.”
“Get what?”
“That you’re mine, Amity. My woman, my old lady, my everything.”
“G,” I whisper.
“I’ve gotta go.” He gives me one last kiss before he heads out. “You can tell me how amazing I am later. I’ll expect a slide show and a hands-on demonstration—preferably while you’re naked and on your knees,” he calls out as he leaves, which is just as well. I was about to tackle him and take matters into my own hands.
I hear the door close and the sound of his bike starting up, so I drag myself out of bed and head into the bathroom to hop in the shower. I was going to go for a run, but after this morning’s vigorous bedroom workout, I decide to skip it and go tomorrow instead.
